If the woman is over bat mitzvah we can assume that she is either a niddah or an eishes ish and therefore would be at least an issur kares and therefore has an issur of “lo sikrivu” which is included in the category of “giluy arayos” which is one of the Big 3.

I don’t know who does what when it comes to parshios tefillin. The machzor I use says that some say them and some don’t and there always seems to be a discussion about which way we follow. As the old joke goes, the minhag is to argue about it.

In terms of the question of the OP, I’m not sure what the question is. If you are saying the birchos krias shma, then why not say shma itself as well? It is part of davening.

Some people say the parshios of tfilin by mincha. I imagine saying krias shma as part of davening can’t be worse than that.

While we’re at it, what are the most common haftorahs?

I assume Dirshu Hashem is the most common. Then there is Hashamayim Kis’i and Machar Chodesh which happen a few times per year. Then there would be Roni V’simchi and Roni Akara / Aniya So’ara which are lained twice a year when Noach is not R”Ch. The paragraph of Shuva is lained twice. So is Mi Kel Kamocha for those who lain it as part of Shuva and Yonah.

The paragraph of Al yishalel chacham is lained on Tisha B’Av as well as Tzav when it is not a special haftorah. And Haazinu has the same haftorah as 7th day of Pesach though Haazinu can be Shuva.

    Did I miss any?

It’s not a matter of forcing people to Google. I think the havana is that a fancy wedding hall is a known landmark that shouldn’t need an address (for those in town). For example, you might invite your neighbors to a “kiddush at the Young Israel of Coffeeland” without giving an address because everyone in Coffeeland knows where the Young Israel is.

Perhaps this is even some sort of a throw back to ancient times when towns were smaller and there were no addresses.

Since this is the CR, I’ll have to say that this is probably chukas akum because the goyim would always get married in the church in the center of town that didn’t need an address because everyone knew where it was.

Whenever there is a double parsha, we generally read the haftorah of the 2nd one, but when achrei-kedoshim are together we read the haftorah for Acharei because we try to avoid reading the haftorah of Hatishpot whenever possible because it mentions the “Toavas Yerushalayim” (see Megilla 25b).

When Achrei and Kedoshim are separate, if one of them is a special haftorah such as Hagadol or Rosh Chodesh, we read the haftorah for Acharei on the other one.

The only time we would ever read Hatishpot is when the parshios are separate and neither has any special haftorah. Even then, there are some who have the minhag never to read who will just read the haftorah of Achrei twice in those years.

Which leads to another trivia question, other than reading the haftorah for Achrei twice in a row as mentioned above, when else do we read the same haftorah 2 weeks in a row?

I have seen invitations that do not list the address. It is considered fancier that way for some reason.

Read through the Rambam, Shulchan Aruch, etc. You will see that any heter to listen to music is not pashut, even year-round and certainly during the 3 weeks. Obviously, a seudas mitzvah such as a wedding or even a chol hamoed seuda would be different.

The a capela that they have nowadays is also very not pashut.

People seem to take for granted that concerts during Chol HaMoed Pesach are muttar but there are actually those who would assur it due to the fact that it is during sefira…

I’m not saying that you should follow every chumra in the book but it is important to understand that some of the psakim we have are kullas, not necessarily lechatchila, and are often misinterpreted and taken too far.

Actually, according to the letter of the law, all concerts should be assur all the time since the churban, not just during the 3 weeks.

imagined! But things only continued to

    became

more and more meaningful as the day

    went on.

I landed in Eretz Yisrael over two hours

late, and had already missed two

out of the three homes that the OU was

    planning to visit.

So I met them on the way to the Shaer

home which is located in Talmon, a

neighborhood of 280 families, which is

surrounded on all sides by Arab

Villages. We arrived there at 3:30, and

were told by the Policemen, that

the family was resting until 5:30. So the

OU van decided to leave, but I

chose to stay and wait it out.

So there I was, alone, in a far flung Yishuv

that I have never heard of,

drenched with sweat, with not a living

person in sight, in any direction.

I begin to walk around looking for a Beis

    Midrash, and after about a

minute, a woman walks out of the Shaer

    residence, and I sheepishly asked

States, but I live in Talmon for over 20

years. How can I help you?”

anything, as I had a last minute flight,

and they would not provide me with

food on the plane, and I am feeling very

into her home, quickly served me a

beautiful platter of fresh fruit; gave

me a tour of the local shul and mikvah,

acquainted me to the local shomrim

    and Chayallim, and proceeded to

introduce me to many of the local

    families

the other, families began to break

down crying, as they heard that a guest

had arrived from America to share

    in their pain.

But I watched as these incredible

families, walked up and down the streets

with bottles of water, delicious cake

    platters, freshly diced fruit, tuna

and egg sandwiches, and everything else

    you can possibly imagine; offering

the crowd that was beginning to form

outside of the Shaer residence. Their

    outpouring of love was quite

overwhelming to watch, and it is

    something

that is so hard for me to properly express

    in words.

Signs were posted by a table at the

entrance to the door, asking all

visitors to write down what services they

might be able to offer the family

in the coming months, and when they

would be available to render them. A

plumber wrote that he has off on

them should they ever need. A therapist

wrote that any day after hours they

could feel free to use her services. A

young teenage girl from Beit Shemesh

wrote that she has the summer off, and

would be happy to entertain anyone

in the Yishuv who was busy caring for the

the list went on and on and on.

Politicians began to gather and many

people could be seen waiting for the

school friends of Gilad began to

    recount stories of his youthful

personality, but after just a few minutes,

Mr. and Mrs. Shaer asked that people

please make way for the Kehillah who

has sent someone all the way from

him; his visit means the most to us right

now; though we may be closer to

many of you sitting in the room.” I then

    received the most warm, gracious,

    gentle, and highly emotional embrace

from Mr. Shaer, who was completely

    gesture.

The room grew silent and we began to

speak with one another; I then

proceeded to present the letters from our

shul, which threw the room into a

complete hysteria, and Mrs. Bat Galim

Shaer began to speak with me about

her feelings of love for our Kehillah.

    Although there were numerous signs

posted, that no pictures be taken at the

shiva house, Bat Galim encouraged her

    friends and relatives, to take

pictures and share them with both her

family and our Kehillah, so they

would remember, and that we would be

able to see how much this special

    visit meant to them.

    Surprisingly, she then proceeded to

    personally address our wonderful shul

on video as well, and asked her friends to

    share her personal message with

our shul via email before Shabbos; so we

    could all appreciate the Shaer

    and incredible sense of strength

that they felt by our gesture.

I then traveled to Nof Ayalon to visit the

Frankel family. I got to speak

very personally with both Mr. and Mrs.

    Frankel, and they too were

    overwhelmed with our sense of

connection and achrayus to Am Yisrael

    and its

    terrible tragedies.

only you who feel it for us, you

and listen to the shiurim on YUTorah, and

If you give money to a yeshiva they can use it to pay the rebbeim, pay the mortgage, or to buy toilet paper. All are necessary parts of achieving the “goal of the organization”. Advertising is also part of this. It is part of the steps that Oorah thinks is necessary in order to function to the level that they do. Therefore, it should not bother you that some of “your tzedaka” is going toward fancy advertising.

On a similar note, if you give tzedaka through a fund raiser, he might get a commission. Some people don’t like this and want “all of their tzedaka money” going to the organization. But it is the same thing, the yeshiva paying the fund raiser is just as much a part of their business as paying the rebbeim.

In other words, I can’t stand people who fault Oorah for the advertising. Lemaysa it works so why not do it. They happen to be, in my opinion, a very worthwhile organization that does a lot of good work with the money they are making. Without all the advertising, this might not have been possible. (They also happen to be very entertaining which itself is a nice thing that I think the klal needs)

You are correct that the need for fancy auctions and advertising shows that many frum people have their priorities wrong and don’t appreciate tzedaka enough but that doesn’t take away from what Oorah does.

“type 1: gives tzeddakah for the sake of the mitzvah, for the sake of giving, to the places he deems worthy and without any other motives. these people may even specifically not give to the organizations that have fancy advertising campaigns.”

Why would someone in this category not give just because there is a fancy campaign? If it is a worthwhile tzedaka, what does the fancy campaign have to do with anything? If anything, they should be happy that a worthwhile tzedaka is getting its name out.
