Today’s new chumra is that you should not take on any new chumras without consulting a Rav who knows you well. Let’s see if you can hold by that one!

True Joseph, there is a BIG difference, but here it is much worse. There you can run away and hope the guy never finds you again. Here, on a public forum, everything you say is there for the creep to read and re-read until he pieces together everything he can about you.

If anything, it is Chava, not Adam they are “poking fun of”. And it is a good point they make. Chava added extra chumras and treated them as the actual mitzva and the snake took advantage of that to get her to sin. The yetzer hara nowadays does the same thing with our chumras. There is nothing wrong with gedarim and chumras as long as we realize what they are and act accordingly and make sure that our chumras don’t turn into kulas.

It’s not about hiding any wrongdoing, the problem we are worried about here is people being figured out by creepy people. If a random stranger would come up to you on the street and start asking personal questions about your daughter, would you answer them, or would you run away as fast as you can? Keep in mind that this is a public forum that can be read by anybody.

Quote from his speech at stanford in 2005:

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn’t even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor’s code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now.

This was the closest I’ve been to facing death, and I hope it’s the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

    OneOfMany:

Which four women in Tanach died in childbirth?

(Someone actually asked me this, and never told me the answer. I could only figure out two. It’s driving me crazy…)

    1) Rochel Imeinu

    2) the daughter in law of Eli Hakohen (http://www.mechon-mamre.org/i/t/t08a04.htm)

    3) Michal bas Shaul (http://www.mechon-mamre.org/i/t/t08b06.htm)

    4) I think that the mother of Esther died in childbirth as well.

    New Question:

    1. Which word appears three times in a row in Tanach (there are a few answers, 2 of which have a slight change)?

    2. Which two words appear 3 times consecutively in Tanach?

Other than “kadosh, kadosh, kadosh”, what other answers are there?

a sheep without a spleen- it may be a tzaar for you, but imagine the reward you will be getting! l’fum tzaara agra.

l’fum tzara agra doesn’t really apply here. By sukka, if you are in tzar then you are completely pattur from sukka, it’s not even a chumra to go in the sukka anyway (except perhaps the first night). One who does sleep in the sukka despite the tzar is not called a tzadik but rather an am haaretz.

ayc, many months NYC does have that problem. I once went OOT (is EY OOT?) the 2nd Shabbos of a month and after Shabbos was looking for people to say kiddush levana with. but they had all said it the previous week. Granted, it’s not just NYC, but Eretz Yisrael generally does not get cloudy during the summer months

After reading this story I noticed a few problems with it. First of all, our Josephf would never call a woman. Second, he would never go to Jury Duty. So perhaps this story happened to a different Joseph.

Toi, that is the way of the world, people will worry more about finding dates for pretty girls who they don’t know at all then finding dates for girls who they know well, know that she has other good qualities etc.

Perhaps this is one of those things that everybody knows but doesn’t realize until it is pointed out, like the beginning of mesilas yesharim. If people would just think for a minute and realize what they are doing they should realize that there are many singles who they know well who they are not doing any hishtadlus for. If you are honest with yourself and ask yourself what the reason is you will quickly realize that your brain has very strange priorities

“but I never saw a place advertise cholov yisroel and pas yiroel and be open on Shabbos”

You listed 3 things all of which are not necessary in order for the food to be “Kosher”. They are all chumros. People need to know how to differentiate between halacha and minhag. If you are machmir not to eat at places that are open on Shabbos then it is up to you to determine whether a particular establishment abides by your standards. Don’t just assume that because they are cholov yisroel that they are also closed on Shabbos.

You are supposed to pay attention and answer amen during chazaras hashatz all year long.

During Rosh Hashana Mussaf this is even more important because most shuls nowadays blow shofar during chazaras hashatz instead of during the silent shmoneh esrei so we are yotzei the inyan of shofar during tefilla by listening to chazaras hashatz.
