Good ????. It does say ??? ????? with regard to humans as well – ?????????? ????-???? ??? ??????? ?????????? ???????? ????-???? ?????? ????? ????? ????????? ?????? ????? – but the appellation ??? ????? seems strange for an animal. Chizkuni makes note that with regard to birds, the Torah never uses these terms. He says that these terms apply to any being whose physical ????? ?????? is similar to a human’s. Rambam writes that these words are typical homonyms (in the sense he uses the word) – words which start off with one meaning and then are “borrowed” to mean other things. He writes (Guide 1:6):

“The two Hebrew nouns ??? and ??? were originally employed to designate the “male and female” of human beings, but were afterwards applied to the “male and female” of the other species of the animal creation. For instance, we read, “Of every clean beast you shall take for you by sevens,” ??? ????? (Gen. 7:2), in the same sense as ??? ????, “male and female.” The term ??? ????? was afterwards applied to anything designed and prepared for union with another object. Thus we read, “The five curtains shall be coupled together, one (???) to the other” (?????) (Exod. 26:3).”

There is a Midrash that tells a story:

R’ Eliezer (?) was once giving a shiur to a large group of people, on the halachos of burglaries. In it, he expounded and elaborated upon various methods one might use to sneak into another’s home, and he brought it home by citing some specific, relevant examples. The Midrash says that that night there were 3000 (?) burglaries in town.

Point is: Parent’s, teach your kids. If you don’t agree, then in this case, keep it to yourself. We don’t need people arguing here about it, turning this thread into a veritable instruction manual for creeps.

Jothar, you are wrong. On the contrary, R’ Aharon Feldman’s position is that to say the Rebbe is alive is not apikorsus, even though he believes it to be a lie and a foolishness, as long as one is not asserting his divinity.

    This is his letter: http://moshiachtalk.tripod.com/feldman.pdf

(Mods, please let it through – it is just this letter)

It is sad. The truth is I don’t think there’s a real philosophical issue here. Sometimes people go through a traumatic event and they are powerless to stop it and they have a need to blame someone or express their pain and frustration and God is the obvious choice. But it’s a problem really for therapy, not for kiruv. She’s an adult and runs her own life, but I think if you want to help her the best way would not be to show her the error of her ways, because I don’t believe she’s truly coming at it from a logical angle in the first place. Try to get her to read books or get professional counseling to deal with her pain. Tell her you aren’t going to discuss whether she’s right or wrong about God and prayer etc. because what’s important now is that she’s hurting and the fact that she has someone to blame won’t really remove the pain from her heart, so it would be worthwhile for her to try to get help in dealing with the pain in a healthy way. Once this happens, and it’s a process of course, hopefully her feelings of pain will start to ease, and then she will naturally be more receptive to accepting God back into her life.

??? ???? ????? ??? refers to the psak of the Beis Din Hagadol. See the Ramban on the pasuk. Yiftach and Shmuel both had the power through their respective Batei Din that Moshe and Aharon did. We don’t.

He claims that he never wanted to become a rabbi and he just did it so not to disappoint his father. There are videos on YouTube in which he talks about it, I don’t know if the Mods will allow them but do a Google search.

What year are you in? There’s a difference. Until second/third year you still have the high school crowd, which is a mixture of in town and out of town generally yeshivishe crowd. Some might be considered “harryish” (he said it first) but a lot wouldn’t. After third year there’s a turn-over, the guys who’ve been there all along went to Israel, and what’s left is mostly a completely different crowd – mainly a mix of guys coming back from KBY type yeshivas who don’t want to go to YU because they want to be more immersed in their learning but are generally the YU crowd, guys who are from typical yeshivishe yeshivas who want to go to college and remain in a yeshiva atmosphere, and guys who have a yeshivishe background and want to learn but want the “hashkafa” or the Rabbeim. It’s a mix but one thing they have in common is that they are very accepting and friendly (the joke goes that in R’ Frand’s shiur there are double the amount of chairs as guys – because everyone brought another one for someone else) and “normal.” Most people could probably find their niche there. Another major ma’alah is the Rabbeim, you have a few people there who are very big stuff and there are a variety shiurim you can attend even if you’re in fourth/fifth year, something not many yeshivos I know have.

This is apparent every time you ask any rav a shaila in halacha and do what he says, even though you have no idea whether it is correct or not.

Yes. But that is exactly why I ask and follow blindly, because I acknowledge that have no idea. If I am fully convinced one way over the other, I wouldn’t follow blindly.

Why do you need an umbrella organization? I don’t know about Chabad, I’m referring to other ones. Each has their rabbanim who give them guidance.

The kiruv movement, unlike almost all other major international religious Jewish organizations, has no guidance from gedolim at the top and no one in charge.

    That is a fallacy.

We also know that there are many times we follow our leaders as if they were just about infallible. For example, when there was a sanhedrin, their decisions would be koveah halacha, even if completely wrong in an objective sense.

Ha gufa. Since they were kovea halacha right and wrong were irrelevant. Which is absolutely inapplicable to our time, when our leaders do not have that power.

The gemora says you shouldn’t even go into a *city* where avoda zora is practiced, but we can’t follow that since it is virtually impossible.

You are making up reasons. Go vaiter in the Gemara, you’ll see why we “don’t keep” that one.

You can’t go into a church because of mar’is ayin. Who says you can’t go in if everyone knows your intention, i.e. you are a chief rabbi going in for the purpose of public relations?

That is a very broad statement.

Off the top of my head, here are some things to consider: Was it a trinitarian or a unitarian church? Even if it was trinitarian; since everybody knows his intention when he’s going in, is it still assur?
