“And yekke2, old question. Pashtus PAA is right, although it’s not so ????, especially as all the Elves are doing is picking them up. So Dobby in his time at the Malfoys could have just picked up some clothes. And can all House-Elves not work with clothes? ???? its ???? on ??? ?????.”
In Dobby’s case, Lucius literally gave him a sock. House-elves are freed when the masters physically present them with clothing, not when they have to work with clothing as part of their job– so laundry wouldn’t count.
However, Hermione does not physically give her hats to the house-elves in Gryffindor Tower. The hats nevertheless have the power to free the elves because she planted them with the kavannah that they are gifts. (So if she just carelessly left her own hat lying around, a house-elf could pick it up and return it to its place without being freed.)
Hmmm. Are there two separate ways of freeing? It seems very strange to say that either by mistakenly giving or by intentionally leaving clothes one can free an elf. Surely either a maisah nesinah or a kavono leshachrer should be good, but not both!

Maybe you can be mechalek between wiping memories and changing memories.
Good question. We decided that it could be she confunded her parents rather than actually using a Memory Charm, but it isn’t a very good answer.
October 11, 2014 7:41 pm at 7:41 pm in reply to: NeutiquamErro's favorite thread with an obscure title #1147343ChortkovParticipantI haven’t read Harry potter ( gasp) but am flabbergasted at how presumably grown men ( and women) can be so into this!!!
Well, READ Harry Potter and you won’t be so flabbergasted!
October 11, 2014 7:40 pm at 7:40 pm in reply to: NeutiquamErro's favorite thread with an obscure title #1147342ChortkovParticipantPAA – Harry beats Voldemort because he has the allegiance of the Elder Wand because he disarmed Malfoy who had disarmed Dumbledore. However, Harry didn’t win the Elder Wand from Malfoy; it was just Malfoy’s regular wand. So why would Harry have the allegiance of the Elder Wand?
It seems that the way to win the allegiance of the Elder Wand is by beating the owner in a duel, regardless of which weapon used.
The question is really why Harry needed the Elder Wand – if Harry died to save Hogwarts as he did, and because of that the power of love was used to save everyone (although they were older than 17, ??”?) so that Voldemorts spells couldn’t affect them, and if Harry’s blood was still alive in Voldemorts veins, and therefore couldn’t be killed, why did he need the Elder Wand?
October 11, 2014 7:35 pm at 7:35 pm in reply to: stopping with a chavrusa because he smokes. #1035165ChortkovParticipantSam2 – yekke: Similarly, you need to prove that doing that affects one’s learning. I thought it was an explicit Gemara that the opposite is true. Learning removes those tendencies.
I am not going to fight with YOU about that, if you can’t find a mekor I certainly won’t be able to! I think I heard it besheim Rabbeinu Yona, but don’t remember offhand. Will try find the mekoir!
October 8, 2014 4:01 pm at 4:01 pm in reply to: NeutiquamErro's favorite thread with an obscure title #1147334ChortkovParticipantI bet that even JK Rowling wouldn’t be able to keep up with this lomdisheh discussion. With so many Harry Potter experts here, somebody should write a Peirush Al Harry Potter. The sefer would be a best seller! LOL
This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many more questions, perhaps we will discuss them in the future.
These books have been written. Most people find these questions a chisoron in the book. I find them a maaleh; it shows the tremendous breadth of the series. Almost no other series would be possible to find such tiny details to ask from. Only Harry Potter has such a vast world that can actually have contradictions.
October 8, 2014 3:59 pm at 3:59 pm in reply to: NeutiquamErro's favorite thread with an obscure title #1147333ChortkovParticipantAnd yekke2, old question. “Old question” that hasn’t been answered satisfactarily.
And ????? is spelt with an ?. And it isn’t ???? on that, because Lucius Malfoy never wanted to free Dobby, he just happened to catch something Lucius threw.
ChortkovParticipanthaifagirl/ivory – Nobody is denying (I hope) that there are major maalos involved in internet in general and smartphones specifically. However, only idiots deny the dangers of internet. Pointing out the numerous maalos will get rid of the terrible chisronois.
FYI – the point you brought about streaming videos live to people in faraway locations can be done on smartphones which have been filtered too. Even filtered totally to block browser.
ChortkovParticipantThanks everyone for all your suggestions! Keep them coming!
ChortkovParticipantI happened to be discussing this issue just last night; what is the difference between first and second time @ the rav? Sounds from you like it is a knas. Is there a mekor for that?
ChortkovParticipantHeavybrisker – Judging by your screen name you would probably say no even if it was filtered! Filtered internet has also been banned by those same Gedolim shelo letzoirech.
But the very fact that you post online, and from observations I have picked up from the content of your posts, it seems that you would be quite happy with filtered internet.
But remember, not everybody is like you. Many people come from much more openminded backgrounds, which for them it is very accepted – and not entering the debate about right/wrong, it would defintiely not be a turn off for the shidduch if both sides are holding at the same stage.
October 8, 2014 1:40 pm at 1:40 pm in reply to: NeutiquamErro's favorite thread with an obscure title #1147329ChortkovParticipantPAA – You answered your own question. They can (a) determine magic that was performed in certain places, and (b) determine the location of underage wizards. That is why in wizarding households, they can get away with underage magic, because magic is automatically blamed on the adults who live there. That is how the trace is explained.
However, that seems to be contradictory to many places in the book where it seems that they cannot trace underage magic. (example – When Harry runs away in book 3, fudge didn’t know where he was) So I would find it easier to say that they know the location of underage wizards (as in where they live), and when magic comes up from areas that don’t seem to be populated by wizards, they know to blame it the underage wizard.
(That won;t answer how they could know if it was in the presence of a muggle or not.)
October 8, 2014 1:36 pm at 1:36 pm in reply to: NeutiquamErro's favorite thread with an obscure title #1147327ChortkovParticipantWhy would that be? Surely only the staff have baalus? That would be ridiculous if everything belonged to all the students!
October 8, 2014 1:35 pm at 1:35 pm in reply to: stopping with a chavrusa because he smokes. #1035158ChortkovParticipantThe Little I Know – It does say ?? ??? ???? ??? ????, however, that does not warrant dropping a chavrusa. Watching indecent material can and does distract one from learning. It leaves a roishem. Smoking, whatever the issur is, does not harm ones learning (unless suffering from terrible addiction). No shuychus.
Heavy brisker – You may have heard from the Gateshead Rav, R’ Zimmerman Shlit”a at our many shabbos tables there, that every cigarette is an issur.
ChortkovParticipantFor those who didn’t chap or who I didn’t tell, heavybrisker just let out some heavy reid!
ChortkovParticipantBut I will try send him your best regards nonetheless!
ChortkovParticipantIt’s okay, heavy brisker, even without your payos, Avrohom Avinu promised to pull you out by your Milah. Lucky there will be no tug of war between him and R’ Nachman.
ChortkovParticipantBut Halacha decides what hiddur is, not Reb Chunas.
ChortkovParticipantDY – Of course, but my point was that whatever your attitude is, it is irrelevant when we talk about Halacha!
ChortkovParticipantThe bottom line is that it would be foolish for one’s spiritual health and priorities to instill “Ahavat E”Y” without first consulting a posek or LOR to determine if such a thing should be done and, if it should be done, then by what parameters.
If you don’t agree to the premise that it is a Mitzvah Kiyumis, and you are working with this Mitzvah Chiyuvis, then obviously one would have to sacrifice everything for the Mitzvah.
You are not the first person I have heard like that. Many people seem to think that Yiddishkeit is all about Hergesh (emotion), and about making you feel spiritually fulfilled. What does Halacha matter as long as you feel in the spirit of things? (I know you didn’t go that far!)
That attitude is totally wrong. Torah must dictate our life, not society and social norms. What you decide is optimal for Chinuch cannot change Torah. If you decide Shechita/Milah is cruel, you still gotta do it.
ChortkovParticipantPoppa Bar Abba: I’ve never heard of an optional mitzva. If you mean to say that it is balanced by other considerations, that is one thing. But if you mean that one can just choose to not do it, that seems odd…
DY: Popa, ????? ??? ????? ???? for ????.
Poppa Bar Abba: I meant leshitasi.
Was that a referrence to http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/are-women-reallyjewish?
ChortkovParticipantjf2 – The question didn’t make sense. In the title he seems to be talking about Assur/Mutar, although he phrases weirdly ‘is it practical…’ – I think he means halacha/hashkafah, but just wrote it wrong. (Excuse my thinking, but it sounds like a troll question)
If you don’t mind me asking, Joker, firstly please explain why you would think it assur or muttar/practical impractical when you ask the question?
And secondly, why would bochurim be any different to any other Jewish male (if you were discussing the Pritzus factor, which I imagine would be the only reason for it to be more ossur than anywhere else)?
October 8, 2014 9:04 am at 9:04 am in reply to: NeutiquamErro's favorite thread with an obscure title #1147324ChortkovParticipantOnce we start on the Harry Potter topic – Can anybody possibly explain how Hermione has the ability to free Hogwarts elves? Harry couldn’t free Dobby, he had to trick Lucius Malfoy into doing it. So why would it help for Hermione to leave hats lying around?
??? ??? ????? ??? ??????
ChortkovParticipantcozimjewish – Lots of the people you check Esrogim are nothing to do with Hiddur Mitzvah, because it ISN’T hiddur. Shteit in Halocho the different chumras and kullas, and anything else is simply not a hiddur, it is foolish.
October 8, 2014 8:42 am at 8:42 am in reply to: Totally Random Thread Title Just to Confuse PAA #1061313ChortkovParticipantI know exactly what you meant. Duh.
ChortkovParticipantI have friends there – its supposed to be shpitz yeshivish, very geshmak and totally happening there!
October 7, 2014 11:12 pm at 11:12 pm in reply to: Totally Random Thread Title Just to Confuse PAA #1061309ChortkovParticipantis it me or is chofetz chaim the only yeshiva that actually LEARNS mussar.(mussar seder)
Is it you? Doubt it.
ChortkovParticipantcozimjewish – I made three points there: 1) Don’t bring proofs from Rishonim, 2) Apikorsus is only what challenges the 13 Ikrei Emunah, 3) Regular rant against 4 Minim OCDs.
Which of those “don’t you know about”? And why not?
ChortkovParticipantJoking. Sorry, I didn’t think anybody would have taken that seriously! I should have explained!
October 7, 2014 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm in reply to: Think fast- What's the randomest think you're thunking? #1034791ChortkovParticipantWhich is a big kitrug against us – the Muslims follow the same God we do, and they do a heck of a better job at it than we do. That is part of the problem. With Eisav, the strength comes from our weaknesses (?? ???? ??). With Yishmoel, however, their strength comes from within itself, the only way to beat them would be by outdoing them. Yishmoel are not our antagonists, they are our competitors. Problem.
ChortkovParticipantApparently there’s a will from Rabi Nachman telling his chasidim to come to him for Rosh Hashana
He supposedly said that he promises to personally pull anybody who davens by his kever in Uman on Rosh Hashono out of Gehenom by their peyos.
Last week, somebody asked R’ Avraham Gurvitz shlit”a if he should go – it’s worth it! R’ Avraham replied a) he doubts that R’ Nachman ever said such a thing until he sees documentation of it [and it didn’t sound like he was planning on looking!] b) his father R’ Leib Gurvitz zt”l used to tell Bochurim “What, didn’t you know they shave your peyos off on the way in?”
ChortkovParticipantNothing is illegal anymore.
October 7, 2014 8:37 pm at 8:37 pm in reply to: stopping with a chavrusa because he smokes. #1035152ChortkovParticipantSo unless his chavrusa is repeatedly hugging him, there’s no risk. And if he is, he should stop for a whole other reason.
????? ???? ??? ?? ?????? ?????? ?? ?? ??
October 7, 2014 7:52 pm at 7:52 pm in reply to: stopping with a chavrusa because he smokes. #1035149ChortkovParticipantCan somebody explain what 3rd hand smoke is? (And if it includes after one already cleans ones clothes and breath?)
ChortkovParticipantWhy does one thing need to be done overnight?
ChortkovParticipantIt’s a five day “get-out-of-jail-free” card.
ChortkovParticipantI am afraid my knowledge doesn’t compare to Sam2, Halevi and PAA,but I once heard a shiur from somebody who wanted to prove that the Rambam did have the Zohar. It seems to be quite a controversial issue! The Rambam when he brings down the Ikkrim, he says that anybody who believes that any statement in the ???? is superflous is oiver on an ikker, and brings a specific example which seems very random, yet the ???? on that ???? is ????? to explain how ????? ????? exist in every ???? including that very one.
He said this Bshem R’ Moshhe Shapiro
October 7, 2014 6:46 pm at 6:46 pm in reply to: stopping with a chavrusa because he smokes. #1035144ChortkovParticipantHis Chavrusa dropped him because he was a smoker (sug mentch) or because of the danger involved? If it was because of danger then he was being ridiculous, because what danger is there to sit next to a smoker after the latter washing hands and clothes (and mouth, I imagine!). My better guess would be that he was just giving an excuse, and didn’t like your friend!
If, however, he was dropping him because he was a smoker, and it wasn’t the smoking itself nor the after effects that bothered him, but rather the fact the fact that he was a Smoker (??? mentch), that couldn’t be classified as ridiculous, although it is quite a large statement on his behalf, which any smoker would definitely call unreasonable.
ChortkovParticipantNothing is obvious on the Coffee Room
ChortkovParticipantExplain what “change overnight” means if not becoming a new person ie turning over a new leaf overnight?
ChortkovParticipantThe Chosson is thinking about Daled Bovois, the Kallah likes Chamoil (see Youtube stunning chuppas with shira chior where they sing this), and they both like the “chupa choson” from Werdyger family. Mona Rosenblums “Groise Chasuna” album is also very nice, but not going to be. Still deciding!!
ChortkovParticipant(frummer we may be, depending on how you understand frummer but definetly not better)
Lol. Lol. Lol. +1.
It is obviously ridiculous to bring proofs from the Ovois to our generation, because in every story of the ovois there is more than what meets our eyes, and the Rishonim and Achroinim have so many thousands of different ways of understanding them.
It’s also not apikorsus unless it challenges the 13 Principles of Faith, which it obviously doesn’t.
About the Esrogim, however, it isn’t Frummer, it is more Ga’avah. I do not mean to generalize here and obviously there are exceptions to the rule, but most of the nitpicking and being pedantic over Arba Minim is nothing to do with Halacha, and is simply on who can have the “nicest” set rather than the most Kosher. The Kashrus of an Esrog $18 set is often as mehudar as the $200, just one is a deeper yellow. Halacha is Halacha, and any other decisions revolving Daled Minim is superflous. <end of rant> But here is not the place for that discussion!!
October 7, 2014 2:24 pm at 2:24 pm in reply to: NeutiquamErro's favorite thread with an obscure title #1147315ChortkovParticipant(Quick PJ) Why don’t you make us a graman?
ChortkovParticipantbrisker: sounds like just the thing a heavy brisker would say. While that is definitely the way one should be shoef (ambition) – to become a full eved Hashem without any need to be yourself (or better put, that being yourself would be an eved Hashem), that is extremely difficult in 2014, and doing that would be detrimental in the long run, and therefore entirely wrong. The eitzah is to try be a better person on the whole but only truly work on one thing at a time.
October 7, 2014 1:51 pm at 1:51 pm in reply to: NeutiquamErro's favorite thread with an obscure title #1147312ChortkovParticipantThe answer lies in the paragraph you so eloquently quoted: “ASKED SCRIMGEOUR”. Hermione was obviously just trying to present her opinion of the then current politics and the world situation and the Ministry’s incompetence.
Apparently, our Great Author has decided (and she can, because she wrote the books!) that after the fall of the Death Eaters, when Kingsley Shacklebolt became the Minister for Magic (etc. etc), the world became a happier, better place with no dirty politics (oxymoron?), and Hermione now felt that her place was there.
Alternatively, Hermione stopped being one of those who followed authority and complained about it, and rather became a person who “took the law into her own hands”, and decided that a way to MAKE the world a better place would be by becoming a politician herself. That would mean that she wasn’t “following a career in Magical Law”, but rather using that as a platform to fulfill her dream career.
But good point anyway!
October 7, 2014 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm in reply to: Nussach or Minhag – what is the correct word? #1034560ChortkovParticipantDefinitely a minhag. A “nussach” is a version of something, therefore including davening, learning, singing etc. Your “nussach” is also a minhag – i.e. “My minhag is to daven Nussach Ari”.
October 7, 2014 1:07 pm at 1:07 pm in reply to: NeutiquamErro's favorite thread with an obscure title #1147309ChortkovParticipantSo if Lupin would be Mazik (a)during full moon (b) on a regular day, would that be ??? or ???

Nope. It’s too confusing only as a result of you not learning gemara.
