December 10, 2014 2:31 am at 2:31 am in reply to: Is Being Right More Important than getting along? #1053072Torah613TorahParticipant
Popa, I still think cayenne on the register is the best idea.
Torah613TorahParticipantIt is never okay. If you have triplets, you need to hire help or ask everyone in the community to do you some chessed, or both.
As Syag pointed out, babies drown from this, even ignoring the emotional damage.
Torah613TorahParticipantRoshei Yeshiva have older single daughters, too.
September 29, 2014 11:44 pm at 11:44 pm in reply to: Things people in the CR find offensive #1038553Torah613TorahParticipantI’m pretty sure 40 is the cutoff for learning kabbalah.
Torah613TorahParticipantAlso, in the Midrash on Tehillim it says, ?? ????? ???? ??? ????? ????? ??????? ?????? ?? ?? ?? ???????. So this was an appropriate time of year to ask this question!
Torah613TorahParticipantThank you for making me look this up.
(Quoting from the Siddur Vilna)
The Avudraham says that it is a zecher to Yetzias Mitzrayim.
The Machzor Vitri says that we say it because it was a custom in the Jewish communities of Rome, Spain, and those surrounding them, from the day we were exiled from Jerusalem until now, to sing it all year every day, and “Minhag avoseinu Torah hee”.
Also, we say this Shira which is about the fall of our enemies, and to praise the One Who does wonders, and to bless His name before and afer these praises (Baruch Sheamar and Yishtabach.)
Hope this helps!

September 14, 2014 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm in reply to: Expanding on the Shidduch Crisis Math (Catastrophe) #1036584Torah613TorahParticipantThis is all very interesting about the concept of Zivug and Sotah, I never realized they were connected.
I think there is a certain amount of hishtadlus, and it’s different for every person and every situation. Most of us are not on a level to sit in a cave and have fruit trees grow for us and a spring pop up near us.

September 14, 2014 7:18 pm at 7:18 pm in reply to: Craziness!? On average there are 86 single men to 100 single women #1032058Torah613TorahParticipantThat’s not a useful statistic because above 15 includes all people above 15 and as yehudayona pointed out, women live much longer which skews the ratio.
There are more men than women at birth, so looking at the numbers at birth is just as useless.
If you want a useful statistic, look at the male:female ratio at childbearing age – let’s say 15-50 years. Nearly all people who start families, marry within these years.
Even better, look at the dating ages of 20-35.

September 10, 2014 8:22 pm at 8:22 pm in reply to: Expanding on the Shidduch Crisis Math (Catastrophe) #1036540Torah613TorahParticipantYes, privileged.
Popa: How much does each individual shidduch contribute to the shidduch crisis. Joke.
Syag: Do BTs count in the shidduch crisis.
Mod 42: Nobody will ever get married.
T613: A modest proposal in the Swiftian model that uses arbitrary assumptions and ultimately infers that the cost of leaving an individual girl single is $1000.
September 10, 2014 7:56 pm at 7:56 pm in reply to: Expanding on the Shidduch Crisis Math (Catastrophe) #1036537Torah613TorahParticipantThe Torah613Torah Socioeconomic Model For Shidduch Crisis Recovery: (TTSMFSCR for short)
I propose the “simcha rating”. The more you fix the shidduch crisis, the more simcha. And this should have economic implications.
Suppose the difference in years exactly correlates to the number of marriages. This means we can assign a “simcha rating” to every successful shidduch.
E.g. A 24 year old man marries an 19 year old woman: Their simcha rating -5, since his getting married resulted in 5 other girls NOT getting married.
Suppose a 20 year old man marries a 24 year old woman: +4.
This provides an easy way to solve the shidduch crisis: Compel every person who marries someone younger has to pay $1000 for every year the woman is younger to NASI. And NASI pays out $1000 per year for every year that the woman is older.
Perhaps Mr. Rechnitz would be willing to jumpstart this initiative?
Torah613TorahParticipantEnglish: Just read books.

Torah613TorahParticipantWhat subjects do you want to study?
Just look for the cheapest on Amazon if you really don’t care.
Torah613TorahParticipantA moderate amount of anxiety is a healthy thing; it keeps you from being too careless.
September 8, 2014 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm in reply to: Would you rent your apartment to a financially stable divorcee? #1031862Torah613TorahParticipantThe Goq: I really have no idea what people think. I am sure there are different opinions on the matter.
But generally, it’s not a good idea to share too much personal information with potential landlords. The impression the OP should be going for is “older single guy with a good job who will pay rent on time” vs. “older divorced man who probably can’t discipline the kids he might have partial custody of”. It could be the very same person, but which one is more likely to sound like a good tenant.
September 8, 2014 5:51 pm at 5:51 pm in reply to: Would you rent your apartment to a financially stable divorcee? #1031858Torah613TorahParticipantRebyidd has it right – why are you mentioning it? Just say he’s single.
This shouldn’t be such a big issue, unless he’s looking for a specific type of apartment that usually is rented by families.
Torah613TorahParticipantSeminary is very important for shidduchim, so that you can fill out that space on your resume. It is not so important in terms of actually getting married.
That’s why I went to seminary. So that people wouldn’t ask why I didn’t. It served its purpose.
Torah613TorahParticipantSoup from a stone. Fancy that!
The stone is reusable, too.

Torah613TorahParticipantTherapist, “coping strategies to deal with marriage”? You make it sound like being married is a tribulation to “cope with”.
Torah613TorahParticipantYour trolling is improving, rebyidd.
Torah613TorahParticipantOr a cleaning lady. They really rake it in. $20/hour, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, plus bonuses, comes out to 40k a year and it’s off the books.
Torah613TorahParticipantDoctor, if you can get a scholarship or someone else to pay for your medical school.
Then become a SAHM and work 8 hours a week. (I know someone who does this.)
June 16, 2014 10:07 pm at 10:07 pm in reply to: Liberal way vs. keeping tradition and Law re to oo #1019912Torah613TorahParticipantIt’s very easy to convince yourself that you’re doing what you’re doing to serve Hashem. That’s why we all have an obligation to learn Torah on our own, and also to have Rabbonim who have greater Rabbonim they consult with etc. And that’s why we have the Oral and Written Torah which tells us what to do.
Even the most misguided people don’t think of themselves as bad, but as misunderstood.
But I agree with your overall point.
Torah613TorahParticipantThat’s actually very shallow.
Torah613TorahParticipantYou don’t have enough posts on YWN to get married yet. You need to work on that first.

Torah613TorahParticipantOomis- tbsp
I make this recipe minus the sugar. IT DOES NOT FREEZE WELL. Unless the OP has found a way to make it freeze well, in which case she should explain how she defrosts it in such a way that it doesn’t turn soggy and have a freezer burned taste.
Torah613TorahParticipantThat’s a very good point. I have a sibling who listens to classical music all the time. She says that certain composers are worse than others.
I personally find that Wagner, for example, often sounds destructive and crazy, whereas Haydn or Mozart are more uplifting. But maybe I’m wrong.
Torah613TorahParticipantRebyidd, lol, I used to wonder the same thing! Does it matter if our actions matter, or if we believe it matters?
In the end, I decided that since Hashem cares about our Kavana in our actions, it must be that what we believe also matters, not just our actions. What do you think?
Torah613TorahParticipantEpipenologue:
She dipped a spoon into the split pea soup, and as she tasted the hot, nourishing, perfectly seasoned soup, her eyes filled with tears as it burned her tongue.
Torah613TorahParticipantI come here to escape my therapistophobia
Torah613TorahParticipantDid they say “Yes, the other half”?
Torah613TorahParticipantI think that the girls who believe in the shidduch crisis have a harder time getting married.
The proof is, that the older an unmarried girl is, the more likely she is to believe in the shidduch crisis.
Torah613TorahParticipantPopa, may I respectfully disagree.
Hashem created Chava after Adam was created. So Chava was younger than Adam.
So there is no shidduch crisis. Women were younger than men from the very beginning.
Torah613TorahParticipantAnd did she tell him before they got married that she was dumb? No she did not.
And did he tell her before they got married that in 15 years he would drink beer and post on YWN for 4 weeks? No he did not.
You should try to get them back together. They deserve each other.
Torah613TorahParticipantPopa: His ex-wife’s definition of a bad husband is drinking beer and posting on YWN? She really is dumb.
Torah613TorahParticipantDo seminars count?
