I’m gonna chime in here and suggest that people not ‘think’ as a basis for their ‘psakim’, go learn the sugyos of chukas hagoyim. I think Sam would be correct. It certainly originated as a form of worship to something unjewish. it neednt be christian exclusively to assur it.

redleg- see tosfos AZ in the sugya about bamma and why its assur today.

wrong. only if they keep it because moshe told them to from Hashem.

usually the yeshivas that let smoking fall into two categories. either they are very yeshivish, and the result of banning smoking is having a 35 yo mashgiach having to nebach run around trying to bust guys, because no-one will care about any rules; or b. a yeshiva for bochurim that need a little more breathing room (pardon the pun) and have fared badly in the mainstream places. these guys cant deal with rules and people makng them nuts for what really isnt a big deal.

and keep the dumb “well, if their dead blah blah blah” answers to yourself. theyre dumb.

agav, most guys grow out of it.

eclipse- If it comes to removing any members, I believe it would be more appropriate to ask those not adhereing to the standards of the shul to leave. A shul has every right to make standards for its congregants.

Maybe have the rebbetzin or rov start a shiur in a related topic that can quietly broach the subject biderech agav without being to confrontational.

GAW- i cant explain your friends’ affluence, but you are a bit uninformed about the correlation of education to higher earnings over here. the truth is, anyone getting paid a salary ie, not an entrepreneur, is grossly underpaid for the services they provide. i can tel you that one of the highest paying jobs is in fact a cleaning lady. yes, that is correct. an ozeret can make 40-50 nis an hour. i know a woman who went to school to work in a niche field of heart sonography. she went to a hospital to look for a job. they offered her 35 nis. it may be true that in america the degrees that earn (hopefully) 100k+ take several years to complete while here it can take only 2 or three, but the discrepancy in pay is staggering. a secretary here makes 25 nis. on todays rate that makes less then seven dollars an hour. i undersatnd you think this isnt true, but you are not here, and the poster above is. so am i. the fact that certain fields are saturated by chareidi women is unfortunate, but its ridiculous to imply that it is their fault for getting a degree in a field that can comply with the needs and spiritual requirements of a frum family. your point about the army is well taken. not because of why you said so, though. in israel, its all about who you know, not what you know. the guy who was in your unit may be the official you need a favor from or a permit issued by down the line. thats hardly a just reason to forc chareidim to serve. bikitzur, i dont want to be harsh, but you are just another american observing from overseas, judging a situation you are hardly immersed in.
