Can we close this thread please? It’s just one poster driving an agenda over and over again.

Are you looking for a Yeshivah geared towards Ba’alie T’shuvah or a Yeshivah to help you become a Ba’al T’shuvah. There is a tremendous difference.

There are several Shittos about how to do it. Both are fine. There are also several opinions as to when to do it. Some do an Aliyah a day, some all on Friday, some all the Shabbos afternoon before. I have seen many common practices about this.

The huge Chiddush is that if a woman chooses on her own that she wants to learn all of Torah then you are allowed to teach them. The Drishah’s Chiddush that they can learn whatever they want on their own is big enough.

I personally have never refused to answer a woman’s question (not Lema’aseh) because there is definitely whom to rely upon. However, I would not feel comfortable saying Lechatchilah that a woman can learn from someone.

Men not teaching women is the Diyyuk of the Drishah that many rely on nowadays. The more interesting reading of the Poskim claims that you just can’t force-teach a woman, but once she expresses a desire to learn it’s okay to teach her. I am very hesitant about that because it’s a huge Chiddush. See Y”D 246 with the Prishah and other Nos’ei Keilim.

And there is some support to learn whatever you want. As long as it’s not flaunted it will be just for yourself.

It should be public record. Go to a local police station and just ask. There are online databases too, but I’m not sure how to get them.

I think the phrase you’re looking for is “Ma’avir Sedra”. And while you are for sure Yotzei with either Rashi or Onkeles, many recommend doing both.

Who cares how much it happens in the Frum community relative to the rest of the world? Once is an infinite number of times too many.

Don’t worry about parts of Davening to begin with. Find a song that really makes you feel, listen to it, and let the words follow from there.

The State was founded by religious as well as secular zionists. Just because the secular zionists had intentions to destroy Judaism does not mean that everything involved in the State has those intention.

There are already people who claim that the plane attacks were fake and that the buildings fell using explosives. Give it 80 years and people will claim the buildings never existed and that all pictures are doctored. People with agendas will find ways to say what they want.

Toi: There are Gedolim who also don’t hold that way. The real issue boils down to do we throw out the whole thing because it needs major improvements or do we accept the good parts and disassociate from (or try to fix) the bad parts. No one thinks it’s anywhere near perfect.

Toi: I don’t think the country wants to get rid of Frumkeit. They have many opposing goals to deal with. Their main goal is to allow every citizen to have whatever degree of freedom and security that they want-religious or otherwise. They have to deal with fierce anti-religious and anti-government factions. Can you imagine any other country allowing such a large group of people to peacefully exist who declare that one of their hopes is that the country will no longer exist? Anywhere else on Earth that would be called sedition.

Also, in the army the make you keep Shabbos so long as your duty does not involve Chillul Shabbos. Plenty of people told me stories about punishments non-frum guys got for being caught smoking on Shabbos.

I’m surprised no one mentioned this: There is a long-standing tradition that there is a Cherem on anyone who walks under the Arch of Titus. You can go and look at it; but not walk under it.

Itche: Why would that be a Bizui? It would be like saying we don’t Pasken like that Rambam. When we make the Menorah B”B we will have to not Pasken like someone. The Arch seems to be a pretty good proof that the Rambam will be the opinion we don’t Pasken like in this case.

Toi: The “fact” that the State hates Torah is a huge misconception. There are definitely people in it who do; there is no denying that. But the State pays a stipend to every single person who wants to learn full time. That at the very least should be appreciated. There is still more than plenty that needs to be fixed, but generalizations like the ones you made are misleading and inaccurate.

There is a difference between intentionally smelling for pleasure and noticing a light, good smell from a perfume. Just like there is a difference between staring at a woman for pleasure and seeing her. Most people do not intentionally never look at a girl they are dating. I don’t see the distinction between that and perfume, so long as it’s not overdone.

Haifagirl: The period only comes inside the quotation marks when the entire or main body of the sentence is a quote. In his case, where he put a book title in quotes (the proper thing would have been to italicize but maybe he didn’t know how to do that on this forum-I certainly don’t), he properly ended with the period outside the quotation marks. I hope this helps. 🙂

Why is there an obsession with inventing Issurim nowadays? If wearing perfume was Assur then the Poskim would have said so.

Hello: I was listening to an old shiur by Rav Schachter online (if you want to find it, it’s Inyonei Chullin #22 on Yutorah) and he told a story. A doctor asked R’ Shlomo Zalman if an abortion was Assur in a certain very tough situation. R’ Shlomo Zalman kept saying no and the doctor kept telling him that this is a tremendous Sha’as Hadchak and kept bugging him. Eventually, after Rav Shlomo Zalman said no many times he asked R’ Shlomo Zalman to think about it and get back to him the next day. The next day R’ Shlomo Zalman said he still thinks it’s Assur but there is a posek in Yerushalayim (R’ Waldenberg) who is Mattir and that the doctor should ask him.

There is something very strange about this whole thread. To me it seems that someone invented a Gemara, then a Minhag, then a Geder (Din D’Rabannan) to try and push an agenda.

AYC: The Gemara in Sanhedrin refers to three cases which have such specific details that they can never happen: Ben Sorer Umoreh, Ir Hanidachas, and Nig’ei Batim. Ben Sorer Umoreh is the most famous because Rashi Al Hatorah brings it down. However, all three of those are according to a Da’as Yachid. Lema’aseh they all can happen.

It depends on the person. Some are meant to learn and some are meant to work. A person who tries to do the wrong job will have an incredibly tough time. It’s a famous Gemara on Chagigah 6b.

Hello: I guess not. I’m debating naming the Shul and where it is though. I’m not sure if that is a proper thing to do in here though.

(I would never argue that R’ Moshe was Mattir such a Mechitza for the general public. He published what he published for a very good reason. I only defend that one Mechitza that R’ Moshe was Machshir personally.)

Stamper: Whether or not it is because of the Kippah he wears there is still an issue.

My grandfather once visited a Shul. No one said Shalom Aleichem and the only time anyone spoke to him was the Gabbai who asked him if he was a Leivi. He jokingly and insultedly (yes, I just invented that word) asked why he didn’t ask if he was a Kohein. The response was “We have a Kohein of our own.” Disgusting might be over the top, but Jews have been known for hundreds of years for welcoming guests warmly. That should be a Kal Vechomer to new neighbors.

ItcheSrulik: And there is an equal reason to attack someone who doesn’t learn as much as he can. The issue is that learning in Kollel has become a status and a symbol-from both sides of the fence. If people would stop comparing themselves and their communities and just concentrate on making themselves better then a lot of K’lal Yisroel’s issues would be solved.

I think a lot of these issues started when something drastic needed to be done to stop so many people from becoming Maskilim. Since then, those trying to hold onto Yiddishkeit have become overly defensive to the point where if someone is not doing exactly what I am then they aren’t following authentic Judaism. It’s a huge problem. We have forgotten “Eilu V’eilu Divrei Elokim Chayim”.

Health: A Minhag does not have to have proof from a Sefer. However, the Poskim do point out that the only Minhagim to which that Yerushalmi refers is a “Minhag Vassikim that dates back to the time of the Gemara” or earlier, if I got the quote perfect.

I think the world today has become too polarized. The middle ground seems obvious to me. Everyone should learn when they can. If you can afford to learn all day, great. If you can’t but learn whenever you can, that’s also great. We have turned things like learning into a polarizing matter. The only thing that should matter is how much of his “free” time a person spends learning, not how free time he has or how much learning he gets done. There is no reason to resent or attack anyone who has more or less time than you to learn.
