Even our poor today are living a much richer lifestyle than our rich 150 years ago. So if we live a little less richly we can continue the Torah/Kollel lifestyle indefinitely be”h.

The best part of the ’80’s was Ronald Reagan. He has no replacement and is sorely missed.

That reminds me of the time in 10th grade I called a guy in my class up, with a fake serious voice, and pretended to be a NYPD Detective investigating a homicide needing to ask him some questions about his whereabouts the night of the murder. The call lasted about 10 minutes before he caught on.

I think you’re misinterpreting the term kalta litvak. All it means is as a comparison to the varemkeit of Chasidus.

BSD – One thing I don’t understand is if a posek gave you a psak in this case, what are you trying to accomplish by asking your question here? Are you asking about the sociological pro and cons of suing? You already have the halachic answer it seems.

Using that logic, BSD should never let her child outside on their block or she is a negligent parent, since the block bully who is always outside will surely hit her child.

BSD was absolutely NOT negligent for allowing her child to play by her neighbor, irregardless of that neighbors older brother.

    A question.

“what do you think makes someone MO?”

    I don’t know.

gavra: Levi Aron never claimed to be Chareidi. Even when he wasn’t eating in McDonalds. Bad comparison.

    And RSRH was not MO.

BTW, what made Rav Yoshe Ber MO?

As far as semantics, the reason the term mentally retarded has been replaced by mentally ill or special or whatever is precisely because they had become a slur.

You definitely did the right thing by not showing her your feeling on this decision of hers. 1) No need to make her feel bad 2) It’s her decision that you should respect.

What makes Rav Shachter not a Chareidi?

yungerman1 – BSD never said any Rov told her it is okay to sue.

coffee addict – If the child wasn’t hurt by another individual but rather on the property, the halachic standard of holding the property owner liable is a higher burden for the claimant. It doesn’t sound like the child fell into an open pothole.

LMA: Like GAW said, the RY’s can decide their criteria. Nevertheless I agree with you that everyone (bar none) has a right to learn in Kollel their entire life. It just that not everyone has a right to the elite Yeshivos. There are many others to choose from.

GAW: Brisk is an elite Yeshiva (to take one example). I don’t think I necessarily agree with your idea that the elite yeshivos are only for future gedolei hador. I would be more inclusive than that. Nevertheless, perhaps as you suggest some of the elite Yeshivos can indeed cater to future gedolim.

Gavra makes a good point about having elite Yeshivos (they actually already exist and always have), as they are better suited for the better learners. Yes, every Jew has a right to learn in Yeshiva. But it isn’t necessarily whichever Yeshiva (i.e. the elite one) that he wishes. He can learn in other good Yeshivos.

Simply because most Chareidim have big enough yarmulkas that they don’t need a bobby pin. So it is common to see them on the more modern folks. Nothing more than that.

Was their a difference in the halachic status between the first and subsequent wives? In S”A Even HaEzer does a second marriage constitute a pilegesh, or is a pilegesh another and different (allowed) concept while a second marriage gives the second wife the same status as the first?
