“PAA, excellent question. I haven’t denied, per se, the possibility that society, rather than individuals, are at fault.”

And I haven’t denied that individuals are at fault. It’s a combination of societal values plus insensitive people.

“How can we possibly agree with the anger expressed by someone who has a totally different value system regarding marriage!”

If you are talking about the secular colleague then I agree that we shouldn’t agree with her way of expressing anger, because she was disparaging the entire society. What I am doing is pointing out that there is a specific problem in that the way our society portrays women is such that if a woman is older and unmarried she may feel bad/pitied/worthless etc. Now I don’t know if there is a simple answer or even any answer at all. My suggestion is that without focusing less on marriage, we should also focus on other things which can help a woman feel good about herself regardless of what stage of life she is in. Also, I am not saying that anyone is at fault for not teaching girls Gemara. I will try to clarify my point about that: in the other thread I was simply pointing out several things which I perceive to be less than perfect in regards to women in Judaism. I suggested that if women would learn Gemara it might alleviate some of these issues. I was saying that in that thread to explain some of the possible reasons why people nowadays would be pro women learning Gemara besides for the desire for equality. When I quoted that here, it was not to say that learning gemara would help the situation here; I was simply using the same type of argument – that there is a dearth of things which women are led to feel accomplished about outside of marriage. It could be that learning gemara would help the situation here; it could be it won’t. And it could be that there are overriding reasons for girls not to learn gemara. But I was not connecting that to shidduchim.

I did but even if I didn’t it’s ok. It’s just a shame that in that whole paragraph there isn’t one line that I can excerpt for PAA’s not-always-in-context Coffee Room Report Card Comments.

    DaasYochid:

Just to clarify whether we are we are disagreeing and to what extent: Do you agree that society is partly at fault for causing single women to feel this way, but you just think that the way it should be addressed is by the individuals changing (singles working on their self-worth and insensitives working on their sensitivity) or do you think that society is not to blame at all?

    Lior:

What is the suggestion? There are definitely men who get fulfillment from baking and cleaning. They should bake and clean to whatever degree it enhances their fulfillment (obviously taking into account other responsibilities.) I’m not sure what your point was.

“PAA, there are plenty of opportunities for single women to accomplish great things without horving over a Rashb”a, and as I said, the impetus is not on society to shift its focus away from marriage.”

I didn’t say that society should shift away from focus on marriage. What it should do is also focus on other things so that the people who aren’t married feel like they are doing something worthwhile. If society never acknowledges the great things that single women can accomplish then some of them (because obviously there will be those like Syag who can deal with it) won’t feel good about themselves. Learning is just one example of something that might give them fulfillment.

“So is it about anger/blame towards frum society, or is it about the “older” single valuing herself and her important role, right now, to not feel an outcast?”

Those are not mutually exclusive. Yes the older single should attempt to value herself as much as possible but that doesn’t change the metzius of whether or not society causes it to be hard for her to value herself.

By the way DaasYochid, I’m sure you realize (but in case you didn’t, I’m pointing it out now) that my reference to my other thread was not saying that teaching girls gemara will solve the shidduch crisis. In fact I haven’t even discussed the shidduch crisis ever in the coffee room (as far as I can recall). My point was that there are similar factors in both cases, namely a lack of opportunities for females to achieve fulfillment outside of marriage. As writersoul aptly put it, a woman’s single years are seen as a waiting room. So it doesn’t surprise me that when someone turns the age at which she has an 85% of being stuck in the waiting room forever, she would cry. That is in part because of the way society makes it seem as if it is a waiting room. Would it help if women could learn Gemara? Maybe it would give them some sense of fulfillment, maybe not. Many males in fact deliberately push off marriage solely for the sake of achievement in their learning.

“Now can you please solve the tuition crises?”

Sure. Eliminate all the girls schools since they have no need to learn and take all the money that used to go to girls schools and redirect it to boys schools. No more crisis.

This sort of ties in with what I wrote here: http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/why-are-some-people-so-smart/page/3#post-533544

Women are taught that there whole purpose in life is to get married, have kids, and help their husbands and kids succeed in Torah and religion. I such a system, they will feel bad if they are not married because they are made to feel as if their current existence serves no purpose. Similar to what writersoul is saying I think.

It’s a machlokes in the Mishna in Sanhedrin (110b) whether they will come back. Although according to some interpretations that’s not what the Mishnah is discussing.

“If someone didn’t know how to learn, would he “have a right” to be angry at frum society for valuing talmud Torah?”

He would have a right to be angry at frum society for the manifestation of the value in such a way that someone who is lacking it feels worthless. For instance it would be much better for said person if while pedestalizing talmud torah, they would also pedestalize something else such as chessed (albeit maybe not to the same extent) that those who can’t learn Torah can do. But very often the way society portrays its values (which I agree are important and good values) is in such a way as to make everything else seem unimportant in comparison. I don’t think the letter writer is blaming society for valuing marriage/family. She is blaming society for the way it emphasizes these things to the point that it appears as if someone who lacks these things is an object deservant of pity.

I assume you mean that when you said “it’s obvious” it was sarcastic. I am not so out of touch that I don’t know what a hashtag is – my question was as to the reference of the obviousness of the hashtag key as it relates to the obviousness of a semilcolon being a winky face as opposed to a smiley face, but if it turns out that you were sarcastic then I guess I have no question.

Every midda can be used for good and bad. That’s why in every sha’ar the Orchos Tzadikim explains both the good aspects and bad aspects of the midda. That being said, the bad of certain middos can be worse than the bad of other middos and the good of certain middos can be better than the good of other middos.

    DaasYochid:

If you say that there bad in different ways then you don’t have to say that they all stem from/are a form of ???? (although clearly the first three are). This was indeed my original suggestion, but I would like someone to explain in what way Ahava is the worst and in what way Mispaer b’chachmaso sheain bo is the worst etc.

But unlike the teacher’s creative response, mine would make single women (not girls) feel better.

We seem to agree that societal priorities/expectations/values, can sow the seeds which allow insensitive people to be insensitive in his regard. I think we also agree that those societal priorities/expectations/values are a good thing and it is unfortunate that they may have unintended consequences. We also agree that efforts should be made to “prevent” the insensitive people from being insensitive. So where do we argue?

I’m saying that the letter writer has the right to direct some of her frustration at society because (despite the fact that it is doing something good) without it she would not feel bad. You seem to hold that she shouldn’t direct any anger/blame at society.

The Medrash says ???? ??? ??? ???? ????? ??? ???? ???????. That does not necessarily translate into “Listen to her because she is a neviah” and it certainly doesn’t say that in the passuk which was all I had said. All the more so according to the Yefei Toar’s pshat that the medrash doesn’t even mean that Sarah had a greater level of nevuah.

And my point is that it is not so misdirected. Proof: there is no dearth of insensitive people in secular society yet the letter writer is not made to feel bad when talking to its members. That is because of the difference in how secular society views marriage and how religious society views marriage. Obviously, though if people were more sensitive then there would be no problem, so in that sense the individuals are to blame. But there will always be insensitive individuals and it happens to be that in this case, the society provides the ammunition so to speak for the insensitive individuals.

Back in my youth I once asked this to a Rabbi (though I only mentioned the first and third quotes) and he suggested that ???? is a form of ????. But it doesn’t really answer the question because which of the three forms of ???? is the worst? Lichora it’s not just saying that each of these is the worst BECAUSE it is a form of ???? because it doesn’t say that about anything else in ??? ?????. Also, once we’re saying that these things are all a form/result of ????, we can pretty much say that about every midda.

“The most basic emoticons are relatively consistent in form, but each of them can be transformed by being rotated (making them tiny ambigrams), with or a without hyphen (nose). There are also some possible variations to emoticons to get new definitions, like changing a character to express a new feeling, or slightly change the mood of the emoticon. For example 🙁 equals sad and :(( equals very sad or weeping. A blush can be expressed as :”> . Others include wink ;), a grin :D, smug :->, and tongue out 😛 for disgust or simply just to stick the tongue out for silliness, such as when blowing a raspberry. An often used combination is also <3 for a heart, and </3 for a broken heart. A representation of a cat face can be expressed like this: :3, along with a mustache emoticon

    :-{ or :{D.

A broad grin is often shown with crinkled eyes to express further amusement; XD and the addition of further “D” letters can suggest laughter or extreme amusement e.g. XDDDD. There are hundreds of other variations including >:D for an evil grin or >:( for anger, which can be, again, used in reverse, for an unhappily angry face, in the shape of D:< . =K for vampire teeth, :s for grimface, and ;P can be used to denote a flirting or joking tone, or may be implying a second meaning in the sentence preceding it.[13]”

The individuals say or do insensitive things because of the societal factors. For instance, if society placed no emphasis whatsoever on having a family, I don’t think there would be any insensitive comments/actions. NOw as I said before, it might be inevitable, but that doesn’t ease the pain of the one suffering.

    The Maharsha in Berachos (10a) asks how you can daven for someone to do teshuva if yiras shamayim is not biday shamayim. He grants that you can daven for yourself to do teshuva because that falls under ???? ???? ???? ???? ??????? ???? and ????? ???? ??????? ??. He concludes with “v’yesh l’yasheiv.” The Orchos Tzadikim writes in Sha’ar Hateshuva ????? ??? ??? ???? ??? ??????? ?? ?????? ????? ?? ???? ???? which would be consistent with the Maharsha, but in Sha’ar Hasimcha he writes ?????? ??????? ????? ??? ???? ?????? ?????? ?????? ??? ??? ?? ?? ????? ?????? ??????? ??? ??? ?????? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ???? ???? ???? ?????? ???? ?? ??? ?????? ????? ?? ????? so he clearly holds that you can (and in fact should) daven for others to do teshuva.

The obvious opposite is that you won’t get the life extension, not that you lose some of the life you already have. Unless you are assuming that ?????? doesn’t mean specifically shortened.

I agree with the possibility that it’s not a tenai although I’m not sure that that should make a difference considering that the whole reason why you need a tenaiy kaful is precisely that ???? ?? ?? ??? ???? ??? and it doesn’t seem too logical that when the Torah says “do this in order to get this” then it is ???? ??? but by changing the wording to “if you do this then you will get this” it is suddenly not ???? ???. And if you agree with my definition of ?????? then there’s a kashya even forgetting tenai.
