    Exodus, by Leon Uris

maybe kids go off because they feel they have no choice, if they want to follow a slightly different path…for instance a boy may feel that he wants to get a job and go to university, but doesn’t realize it is possible to do both and still remain Frum, because no one ever explained it to him…sometimes when the derech is too narrow, any slight deviation means you are automatically off…

Wolf—you are spot on with your post.

in reply to: saying hello #733196

“adding to this question: how friendly do you have to be to classmates of the opposite gender” with this question, i’m surprised you would go to a school that has members of the opposite gender

    in reply to: OTD #736018

    fair enough….

in reply to: posting pictures on onlysimchas? #735719

Many Gadols say the internet is Assur…but there are plenty of us here. where do you draw the line? Onlysimchas by mere fact that I have seen women wearing pants and or touching before marriage is promoting a very untznius lifestyle…but who am i to judge as I have a facebook page…whats the point of my rambling? Not sure, but I bet there are bigger fish to fry….

    in reply to: OTD #736016

inappropriate stuff, can be very subjective…the rosh yeshiva should have atleast spoke with him and explain why it was inapproriate…having a “warm” talk would probably have been a better way to handle it…of course without knowing the full details I guess it’s hard to say either way….

in reply to: If you would have been as knowledgable as you are now, #733186

Ofcourse…i’m just having some fun with the post…nothing more.

in reply to: If you would have been as knowledgable as you are now, #733183

By saying, “if knowing what i did now”, you are implying that i have the ability to go back in time…which as far as I know is impossible, but if assuming I could, I would certainly be able to play the right lotto numbers, which would be entierly within my control…

in reply to: The name Shira – A Problem? #1160716

“my brother told me today that he heard in yeshiva” I think we need to take a step back and re-read the first line of the post. I “heard” a lot of things, which after further investigation deemed itself to be totally false. This is how rumors get started and is pretty much loshan hora…Secondly, I doubt Rav Chaim Kanievsky would like his name being thrown around here (on the internet of all places), especailly since there is no concrete evidence of this rulling….

in reply to: If you would have been as knowledgable as you are now, #733181

I would have played the right lotto numbers

    where did watermellon go?

    in reply to: OTD #736008

Sadly there are many OTD people, more than people care to admit and many of them share their stories online…

in reply to: The Soton Is Back… #733058

MikeHall, why did you have to put Eclipse down? Anyway, there was a message there…sorry, I was just trying to be Tongue-in-cheek, due the “nature” of the post…after reading my post again I can see it was rude and not as funny as I thought when I was writing it down late last night….

    in reply to: OTD #736001

“i think my concept of OTD must be quite different from other posters here”…CLEARLY it is!

    in reply to: OTD #735984

not everyone who goes OTD hates their parents, although certainly unplugging and spending quality time will help….

in reply to: my brother is off the derech #733307

aries2756 and obnoxious…i think you are both 100% correct.

in reply to: The Soton Is Back… #733044

what on earth are rambling about?

in reply to: Walk the girl to the door #736089

    let the bashing begin…..

in reply to: what do YOU drink on a date? #733165

Scoth, anything with a Glen in the name will do

in reply to: Why should a first date be 3 hours long? #733342

3 hours doesnt seem like much if you consider the fact that many get engaged after a short dating period. 3 hours seems like a rather small investment, when investigating your future mate. Plus even if there is no connection it is a good lesson on how to commuincate and even learn a bit about yourself…maybe there is such a shidduck crisis becase people arent giving others enough time to make an impression. no wonder there is a crisis going on….

in reply to: my brother is off the derech #733302

observanteen…i think your advise may backfire. The OTD person may feel further isolated and withdraw from yidishkite even further. I also don’t agree with “save yourself first” mentality, it seems rather selfish to me and are contrary to showing true chessed and compasion. There is a saying you attract more bees with honey then vinager. I think dealing with OTD’ers is similar. Many experts (rabbis) agree with keeping communicaton open and continous. Arent we taught that we should push away the sinner with our left hand but pull them in with the right???I also find it frightning that one would be so threatned by a OTD person that they themselves fear they may go off as well. I would hope the many years of schooling both in the classroom and home would be enough to keep one on the right path, regardless of whay their friend/brother may be doing. Are you so easlity influenced that you will simply follow what another person is doing, just becasue?

in reply to: broken engagements #732691

Too much speaking and spending time together during the engagement- don’t forget to mention eye contact as well…

    in reply to: #732836

    oomis1105…couldnt agree more 🙂

    in reply to: #732818

“Does it hurt her family’s chance at shidduchim because she was on TV”…There are plenty of frum people with TV’s. They just hide them in “air conditioning boxes” when bringing them home from the store….:)

    Mazel Tov on your win!

i cant figure out all the name changes…whats the point if everone knows who you are?

in reply to: how young is too young to married #733936

mw13..”Yes, I would not let my 13 year old son get married… but only because the western society that we live in has conditioned our teens to act and think like children”…I actually think they act like children becasue a 13yrd is a child. And certainly not mature enough and way to young to have “relations”…

in reply to: how young is too young to married #733930

mw13…How would you feel if your 13yrd old boy was to get married?

in reply to: What would you like to see happen, regarding family, before you die? #730457

My children and every generation after me cling on to their Jewishness as much as someone would cling on to a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean…

in reply to: Yeshivish Lite? #916641

i have to agree with Sam2 on that one…kind of like “yeshivish but with it”, an expression I’ve heard before…

in reply to: Who's going to want to marry me? #730238

Do you really think that I’m “ahead” of other people if I’m already aware of my problem?

100% most people arent’ aware of their problems…so yes you are certainly better off then most

in reply to: Do you or would you wear jeans #730640

there is nothing wrong with jeans black or blue. there is nothing wrong with black pants and white shirts. the material or color of clothing has nothing to do with the type of Jew or level of observance. Any arguments to the contrary are just silly….

in reply to: Hiding Things in Shidduchim #730168

“he was drop twice because of it.”

If that is the case maybe it a failure of our schools, maybe more time needs to be devoted to teaching about this? I remember learning about diabetes etc. in High School biology and science classes. Knowledge is power, without it, it leads to incorrect assumptions…Then again I went to a MO school where Math, Science and Biology was seen as being extremely important subjects to learn about…Like I said before Diabetes is not a huge issue if treated properly and certainly isn’t something that one should be ashamed of.

in reply to: Who's going to want to marry me? #730225

sure its possible, everone has issues. Some people are fat, others short. Some have low self esteem and others suffer from depression. Some are addicted to money and others don’t have any. Some suffer in silent others are more open. You are no different then anyome else. Make sure you are followed by a respectable DR, speak to a Rav who you feel comfortable with and when you least suspect it, you may will find your bersheret.
