“If only people knew the hilig zachen a shtrimel has, they would invest 20000 dollars and more for one”
— In what mesechta is a shtrimel mentioned?
“a shietel is just a head covering”
— a lady’s head covering is mandated by the Torah. Depending on your posek, a sheitel works for that covering.
As the Mesilat Yesharim explains, clothing is a function of Gaavah. A shtrimel is part of that. On the other hand, a lady’s hair cover is (or at least should be) tsniut. If you want to wear a shtrimel, that’s fine, but don’t confuse your gaavah with real ruchniut.
MDGParticipantAnother incorrect teaching:
3 matzot on Pesah for cohen, levy, and yisrael
MDGParticipantvoos epes,
You’re such a caricature of smugness that I’ beginning to find you entertaining.
MDGParticipantVoos Epes,
Now that I know your Satmar background, I think we can find some common ground. Rav Yoel Teitelbaum, while being staunchly anti-Zionist, believed that it’s an internal Jewish matter. All the more so, he did not believe in making friends with people with Jewish blood on their hands.
The largest terrorist group in Lebanon is Hezbollah. They have plenty of Jewish blood on their hands. And if you think that it’s only because they are anti-Zionist, guess again. The leaders of Hezbollah have said extremely anti-Semetic comments. The one that sticks in my mind is where their current leader, Nasralla, said that wished all Jews were in Palestine so that he could kill of them at one time. R”L.
What does that have to do with Iran? Everything. Hezbollah was founded by Iran, was/is funded by Iran, and takes their directions from Iran. See the wikipedia page on Hezbolla: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hezbollah So when Hezbollah says something anti-Semetic, they are showing Iran’s true feelings. Persians like to be graceful (sheker hachain) even if they have lots of hatred down deep. In Persian, this false gracefulness is called taarof. They show a happy face to NK but really don’t care for them. They are just using them.
With all that said, why does Iran let their Jews live there in relative peace? Two reason that I know:
1) The Iranians have some respect for their native Jewish population which has been there for 2500 years
2) Bargaining chips / Hostages – they let it be known that if Israel tries something dangerous against Iran, Iran will harm their Jewish community R”L.
Like I said before, knowing the background of the people will help you understand who you’re dealing with and what they are about. I wish that NK would follow Rav Yoel, bein lechumra bein lekula.
MDGParticipantEven the difference between “then” and “than”?
Then refers to time.
Than is used in comparison.
Using the wrong word distracts the reader/listener from the main point. Using the wrong word consistently make the reader/listener question the speakers education and intelligence.
MDGParticipant” @mdg how will it help me if I know about other cultures traditions”
If you, or those that you associate with – like NK, have dealings with them, you should know who/what you are dealing with. Furthermore, NK makes a lot of noise for publicity. They should know how the world, especially the Arab world, views them.
Knowing history is helpful to understand where we are at today and how we got here.
I agree that knowing the culture and history of Outer Mongolia is probably of no use to us. But knowing the history of our people, the countries of our exile, and countries that we (as a group or as individuals) deal with will help us understand our present and future.
MDGParticipantEnjoy your Happiness.
MDGParticipant“professor mdg” – your snide remarks only further the image of your immaturity
“more then” – it should be “more than”
“I know more then enough about the world” – another comment which show smugness – another sign of immaturity
And like I mentioned before, you need to go learn more Torah.
MDGParticipant“again I feel bad for
Most zionists I don’t hate them there victims of hertzl and Ben gurion”
It should be “they’re” bad not “there”.
When a person uses bad language:
1) it is harder to understand
2) the speaker comes across as doltish
MDGParticipantvoos epes,
You need to see and learn about more of the world. You sound to me like a sheltered 16 year old who has a lot of religious fervor but little understanding of how to apply it because of your little understanding of the world outside your daled amot. For example, that’s why I mentioned the whole Farsi thing. Until you understand the way Persians think, you cannot understand their ability to be gracious, yet lie and backstab. There are other examples.
Besides which, you need to learn more Torah.
MDGParticipant“find me a nk sign with the word hate on it”
Hate groups don’t put the word “hate” on their signs. Even in last weeks parasha, Esav clearly hates Yaakov but does not articulate it.
MDGParticipantOk, so I guess this guy is Leshaim Shamayim:
So he got his girls kissed by a Holocaust denier. What a Tzaddik ! Like father, like daughters.
MDGParticipant“Everything done is mekadesh sheim shmayim”
You wish.
MDGParticipantGoing back to the original question….
I have to agree with PBA. NK and their sycophants are just like the WBC. They take one item of out context, make much noise about it, and annoy others with it.
MDGParticipant” it seems as though your incapable of answering properly therefore you hurl insults”
Answering properly doesn’t work with you as you don’t listen to the truth. And like I said (and others also said), you are not truthful.
MDGParticipantAs Sam2 said above you should really try and learn some history.
Here’s what I really do not get about you NK folks: If instead of spouting untruths you would simply make the Argument that the Torah forbids making a state and therefore we should not make one, you would at least come across as someone whose opinion is worth discussing among other Jews…
Voss epes:
I was not hurling insults. I was telling the truth, which is something that you are not seeing, nor do you want to see.
MDGParticipantVoos pees
You are being so pig-headed and dogmatic that it’s rather frustrating conversing with you. Most of your so called facts are outright lies or taken out of context. When caught in a lie, you can not admit any fault. When presented info that doesn’t support you blind beliefs you summarily dismiss it.
I pointed out your bad English before to say that either you’re uneducated – in which case be quiet. Or that you are being disrespectful to everyone here with your sloppiness.
MDGParticipantIt’s different between us and them. When they say they hate the medina, they mean kill millions of Jews R”L. It’s more politically correct to be anti-zionist than be outright antisemitic.
MDGParticipantWhen they say they hate Israel, they mean that they hate Jews.
MDGParticipant“achmendinijad publicly declared that he doesn’t have anything against jews”
That’s just taarof.
MDGParticipant“Yishmael is a Pera Adam”
The construct of the Lashon is that the noun is Pera and the adjective is Adam. Therefore, that means a vilda chaya with d’moose of an adam.
BTW I have nothing against moose. They are AFAIK kosher animals.
MDGParticipant“4 Never say the word ‘get’ “
That is why PBA used the word “fetch”:
“2. Never speak to your wife while she is fetching your beer.”
MDGParticipant“Don’t worry about it I don’t get offended by posts in the cr”
Just because you have thick skin does not make it ok for you to annoy others. It’s like Mike Tyson saying I can take a few punches, therefore I can give a few too.
MDGParticipant“I dropped a 40 pound thing on my foot about a month ago while it doesn’t hurt anymore my big toe is still black and blue should I go to a doctor or will it get better on it’s own ?”
Trolling on the internet will make it worse.
MDGParticipantvoos voos,
Are calling yourself a genius because of your trolling ability?
You’re actually more of a smart aleck.
MDGParticipantrandomex,
Bp yidd was more annoying to me than joseph.
I find Joseph to be more articulate and mature.
Maybe it was another Joseph account.
MDGParticipantBecause the Mods rightly recognized that he is a troll and they did their job.
Thank you Mods.
MDGParticipant“There more frum then us”
“Yes frum is a Jewish word it means religious”
I wasn’t talking about the word “frum”. Your mechanics, punctuation, and spelling for the remaining 4 words have a lot to be desired.
MDGParticipant“There more frum then us”
That’s not even English.
Stick with Farsi.
MDGParticipantbp tidd,
For a turke char, you show a good ability to use google. And that’s not taarof.
MDGParticipantbp yidd,
Farsi Miduni ?
MDGParticipantNK go to our sworn enemies, like Iran – who have said that they want to destroy us, and hug them. The embolden our enemies. NK makes our enemies think that we are a scattered and splintered nation (quote from Haman). WBC never did such a thing. NK is worse.
What NK needs to understand is that if Iran had no need for NK as useful idiots, the Iranians would just line them up at a wall R”L.
MDGParticipantRav Moshe paskened men may dye their hair for business purposes (IM YD 2:61).
CYLOR
MDGParticipant“I am not an expert on Islamic law, but it seems that the Muslims believe that Israel belongs to Islam because they had sovereignty over it throughout the Middle Ages. …., because we rebelled against the goyim who believed they had rights to the land, namely the Arab League in representation of Islam.”
We don’t live by sharia.
I just learned with my son last night the Mishnah in B”M that says if a deer is on your property but is running normally, you don’t have any claim to it (unless you can catch while it’s still on your property, which is not normally the case). In this case, we don’t recognize their looking at E”Y and saying “mine” Other mishnayot in that first perek also reinforce the fact that one must be koneh something with an action and not just say “I want it therefore it’s mine.”
November 14, 2014 8:07 pm at 8:07 pm in reply to: Paskening Hashkafa: Academic vs. Practical Rationales #1042249MDGParticipantI find it interesting that Abba Shaul in Yevamot (just read about him the Daf Yomi) holds that not being lishma for the mitsvah of Yibum philosophically negates the mitsvah, and one is left with an ervah. This philosophical idea makes a difference in halacha, at least for Ashkenazim, who follow Abba Shaul and do Halitsa and not Yibum nowadays.
November 12, 2014 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm in reply to: Paskening Hashkafa: Academic vs. Practical Rationales #1042248MDGParticipantThe word Hashkafa means looking down (Rashi in B’raisheet), i.e. condescension . Being that a person doesn’t make himself into a rasha, he creates a philosophical construct to justify beliefs and actions. Often that sheds a bad light on others. For example, pro/anti Medina. Each side sees the other as morally off base.
Are there core beliefs and tenants of out faith? Of course, but we should realize where they end and other ideals start. BTW, I’m still working on it.
MDGParticipantAvi K. wrote ” ???? means conquer.here are some proofs: ….”
Lareshet may mean to conquer, BUT in the context of that comment of the Ramban, it clearly does not. As I mentioned, the Ramban uses Kovesh -conquer – 11 times when talking about the Yishuv haArets. But he drops that expression when talking about today. Instead he uses Lareshet in contradistinction to Kovesh. Furthermore, he say Kol Ehad – i.e. not the Tsibbur.
AFAIK The difference between Nachala and Yerusha is that nachala come from the word nachal. A river flows naturally. OTOH, a yerusha needs work; it’s not automatic. Sometimes that work may include war, but not in this case according to the Ramban.
MDGParticipantPAA,
To answer you point, I agree. What’s the big debate about.
I love the video from a few years ago where an Indian man asks the NK people what are protesting. The NK guy can’t really answer what he wants (end of video). See YWN link below.
MDGParticipantThe Ramban, when explaining the “forgotten” Mitsvot of the Rambam, does not say that there is a Mitsvah to conquer E”Y Today.
In that paragraph, the Ramban uses the expression of conquering 11 times. BUT in the last third of that paragraph, he changes his language to say that even today there is a Mitsvah on each individual to inherit it and live there. IMHO, he is working with the 3 oaths. He leaves out “conquering” and says “laReshet” (which may include hard work), and he says “col echad” and not the tsibbur.
October 8, 2014 6:17 am at 6:17 am in reply to: stopping with a chavrusa because he smokes. #1035153MDGParticipant“MDG: Pretend that instead of smoke causing your imagined sensitivities, it was Arrid deodorant. Would you then admit that it is you with the problem?”
That’s rude of you to say “imagined sensitivities”. My doctors told me about my sensitivities using medical tests. But to answer your question, a person doesn’t exhale Arrid deodorant at you for hours at a time like a chavruta with his breath.
October 7, 2014 7:03 pm at 7:03 pm in reply to: stopping with a chavrusa because he smokes. #1035147MDGParticipantI am very sensitive to cigarette smoke. I once had a chavruta who smoked in the evening. Even the next morning, his breath would be uncomfortable for me, bothering my throat.
BTW, many smokers don’t realize how bad they smell. It could be that the chavruta didn’t like the smell but was trying to avoid being insulting like, ” I can’t learn with you because you stink.”
MDGParticipantGlad to hear all went very well.
MDGParticipant“Where are all my great bakers????”
I can’t say I’m great, but I’ll tell you how I make mine, which is without any oil, w/o eggs (except for an occasional glaze), and very little sugar (just for the yeast).
Proof the yeast in warm water in a large cup or bowl. I use 1/4 to a half teaspoon per cup of flour and a few teaspoons of sugar to get the yeast activated.
While waiting for the yeast (15-30 minutes), I get the flour ready, which usually includes extra gluten (sometimes I forget) which I pour in – say about a tbl spoon to 1/4 cup depending on amount of flour. I add 1 tsp of salt for every 3 cups of flour. Mix the dry stuff. Add the yeast water. Knead. Add more warm water as needed and knead. Usually the mixture is too wet. I think that’s a good thing as it means it is evenly mixed. Add more flour and knead in until dough is dry and rubbery. Take off Challah as appropriate. Let rise. Punch down. Shape. Let rise in a warm oven for about 1/2 hour. Take out. Preheat oven and bake at 400-410 for about 15 minutes (rolls) to 26 minutes (larger Challah – about 4 cups).
I’ve never done the following, but it was in the Daf a while ago. The used to glaze with water to give a shiny look.
I hope that helps.
MDGParticipantIt sounds to me that you are looking for something to fill a void, but the music is not working as it used to. You are getting bored with it. Your soul wants and needs more.
MDGParticipant“I’m curious how remaining silent in shul is a zechus for these things any more than keeping any other mitzvah.”
Simple. It’s a zechut for getting your prayers answered. When you talk in shul, you show that the shul is unimportant, prayer is unimportant. Hashem responds accordingly.
There is a source in the Achronim for this, but I can’t remember exactly. Basically, the Acharon asked Hashem why there are the pogroms. The answer, given to him in a dream, was talking in shul. Contemporary rabbis explain that the talking didn’t cause the pogroms, but talking ruins the ability for prayers – like for protection – to he heard.

Nothing wrong – neither necessarily beleive in Torah M’Sinai. Sounds like a good match.
MDGParticipantAnyone can destroy. Creating something good is the real bracha.
BTW, I wish I could live up to that.
MDGParticipant“I go to the mikva each time I post here. “
Before or after posting?
i.e. is posting here kadosh or metamei?
MDGParticipantThe Shulchan Aruch in YD 286:3 says that shuls only need a mezuzah if someone sleeps there.
MDGParticipant“the purpose of the Techeiles strings is so you see them and get reminded of all the things that Techeiles is supposed to remind you of. If so then he did not need to make a Tallis shekula Techeiles in order to make this argument.”
Korach has a 1 – 2 punch. First he had the populist view that we are all holy and don’t need the techeilet reminder string (Moshe). Next he asked if a house is full of sefarim does it need a mezuzah? The halachah is that it does not (although we customarily do put on mezuzot in our shuls which have sifrei Torah). Korach pointed to the contradiction between the needed reminder of tzitzit (regardless of the techeilet beged) and the “unneeded” reminder of mezuzah in a shul.
_____
“For example he could have just held Techeiles in his hand and asserted that his regular Tallis should be patur from Techeiles. “
And if you were to tell me that there might be some quantataive difference between techeilet and mezuzah, a talit comprised of 100% techailet would be refute that. But in both cases they have to be attached of the item.
_____
“it was a collosal waste of time and resources.”
Not for someone filthy rich and power hungry.
