Cherry, you misunderstood, those gedolim came up with the psak for when the hamon am honestly sing “goyishe” tunes for divrei kdusha.

cherry, when one honestly puts divrei kedusha to “goyishe” tunes it gets elevated. This is not my own svarah. Other gedolim past and present (The Sanzer Rav zt”l and gedolim in EY) expressed this view.

While posting on this very website, you are using the same vehicle (network cables, routers, hubs etc.) that are used for the most tomay things. WHen you travel the highways, you are using the same road as some big time baalei avairah.

LC: taking the chasidus route, it has to do with taking an object (here an abstract object: the Yiddish language) and elevating it by learning Torah with it. The same could definitely be said about Aramaic.

I heard Rabbi Yosef Viener say in a shiur “chukos hagoy” is only if what they are doing is out of “goyishkeit.” I highly doubt wearing jeans has anything to do with “goyishkeit.” I see it as serving a function. Jeans are extremely durable. I myself don’t own a pair.

What about davening in a minyan where some people talk during chazaras hashatz or biyechidus e.g. I work pretty far from NYC and sometimes this becomes an issue as this is the only minyan for mincha for miles (this minyan itself is 15 – 20 minutes from my office).

Advantages: 1. In case you need to deal with an insurance company (yours or his) in the future they will want to see a report. 2. This person will hopefully be more careful in the future.

yashrus20, By the time one goes to work he has covered a good part of all 3 Bavos in Yeshiva. Hopefully, one was paying attention when the Rebbi went through the K’tzos Hachoshen (the “Choshen” in Choshen Mishpat). Hopefully, people know what the “Mishpat” part is.

Don’t forget the bain yisrael l’akum part. You can’t “just be machmir” there (e.g. avaidas akum — someone who left the company a few months ago), the din is exact and you should ask a rav. My rebbis tend to enjoy the situations I bring them.

mamashtakah, you’ll need to stress what is meant by “Rebbes who allow smoking” or this will turn into a huge argument, people citing Gedolim who smoked etc. I had a Rebbi who smoked (and was probably addicted) , probably well before the studies came out regarding the hazards of smoking. I bet, if someone would ask him he would be against smoking.

I work for Honeywell. In Hebrew that would really be Ein Dvash, but that could be confusing as Ein can be translated to “lacking” or “eye” as well. I could use Be’er but apostrophes are generally not accepted in user names. Mayan translates to spring which is close enough.

Rav Hutner ZT”L once said “Better for someone at work to regret not being in Bais Medrash than C”V the other way around.”

Why? because that can negate all the learning he did! That’s why he allowed boys to go to college.

I heard this from Rabbi Perlow at a Daf Yomi Shiur, nephew of the Novominsker Rebbe at a Daf Yomi Shiur he gave recently.

Based on this we can apply the following: Kollel is only for those with a thirst for learning. Once that thirst is “satisfied” it’s time to go to work. This way it will be less likely for one to think such things, because he will not (less likely to) regret the learning he did when he “needed” to learn.

    Arc is 100% correct, however

According to the “mainstream media” when a large percentage of whites for for the white candidate it’s racism, when 97% of blacks vote for the black candidate it’s called “Black Pride” Think of it this way, if in situation X, you switch black and white, the “mainstream media” would call it racism and person Y who said/did/created situation X would be tarred and feathered.

Clinton had osama handed to him by the Sudanese on a platter but didn’t take it. This was AFTER the ’93 bombing and after the USS Cole incident. About the economic situation, where do you put the blame and why? I blame the congress because they’re the ones who compose/author bills that directly affect the economy. The timeline shows that things went downhill after the 06 congress came in to power. A congress made up of a majority of democrats, some pseudo-republicans and a few real republicans.

I don’t need any talkshow host telling me how to think. (How’s you NPR and Air America doing?) My brain is in active mode, not passive.

I don’t drink koolaid, too much sugar. 🙂

squeak and sammyjoe: the economic crisis started after congress went to the Dems. Osama is a Clinton failure. Saddam was attacked for violation of 17 UN resolutions, not for revenge.

I heard a prominent Rav in Brooklyn say that Chazanus was created centuries ago to get people interested in coming to shul i.e. hear a good performance. I’d like to think that the rest of us don’t need to hear a good performance to get inspired for Tefilah.

If it even “smells” of abuse, then it’s being done wrong! It’s not supposed to hurt the child or leave marks. The words force, abuse, aggression etc. should raise red and black flags. Additionally, the child cannot see it as the Rebbi taking out his frustration. That just teaches him that when one gets angry to turn to physical force. This is not contrary to my earlier post. The topic started off “physical discipline” and turned to “abuse” which are 2 different things.

Boys: see above and think long term as you are considering shidduchim. This is besides for the superficiality of the matter. The “looks” are anyway gone in a short amount of time.

David Bar-Magen, you didn’t read my full post because you would have come across where I said ..cannot be abused as alluded to in the Gemara. Those Rebbis who do abuse should be reprimanded and relieved of their position. Additionally, you say that if the Mishna Brurah doesn’t cover it, it doesn’t apply? So I guess you’ll ignore 3/4 Shulchan Aruch because the Mishna Brurah is only on Orach Chaim? Smells like “reform” to me. As far as the Steipler’s Teshuvos, I intend to research. External to my comments, I have my opinion on the matter.

This subject is showing your true colors. Quite a number of you guys suddenly went Modern. Leshitaschem, that you follow the minhagim of previous generations, you should be for corporal punishment. The Gemara Makkos says that a Rebbi needs to use physical force. Of course, this cannot be abused (the Gemara alludes to that too).
