    AZ –

You’ve taken your crusade far beyond anything the Roshei Yeshivos have publicly endorsed. You belittle any shidduch crisis causes other than the age gap. You call for Yeshiva bochorim to end their Limud Torah in Eretz Hakodesh early. These, and other enumerated stances of yours, have NOTHING to do with the Roshei Yeshivos.

    Rav Elya Svei:

It says further, in Targum Yonoson, that one should not be a false witness. I want to stop here. In public life here in Brooklyn, there is false testimony. We have merited, through blood and sweat and with the Almighty’s help, to establish large Yeshivos for the boys and Bais Yaakova for the girls. And these schools produced students of whom all can be proud. But then someone comes and says that they are still incomplete. When the boys go out of the Yeshiva, they are still not finished — they still need more studies: they still have to go to “Touro College” to be well-rounded. That is the biggest false testimony against the Torah. The boys do not need such “completeness”.

One is not allowed to be friends with them! One is not allowed to be partners with them! What will be with our children? From where will our great Torah leaders come? From Touro College they will not come! And mothers of Gedolei Torah will also not come from Touro College, because the Gemorrah says that to merit children who will become Gedolei Yisroel, one has to have modesty. And modesty cannot be acquired in Touro College!

If cameras had been invented, you would see show nice photos of Yidden shaking hands with many shady characters throughout our history. We must deal with everyone we encounter to some extent. I’m not necessarily comparing the NYPD and FDNY to any of those, just making a larger point.

Do you think when these officers are in the bar or privacy of their clubs they are complimenting us?

I did appreciate your comments on the shirts, hat, jacket, thread!

sammygol, what does that position have to do with this? I hope you aren’t trying to discredit the Lev HaIvri based on something else he was opposed on. Reb Moshe to disagreed with many on Shabbos Clocks. So what?

The Kuzari writes that Avrohom Avinu, therefore, spoke 2 different languages. One for holy speech – that was Loshon HaKodesh, and the other for mundane speech – that, the Kuzari says was some non-Jewish language that Avrohom Avinu took and changed around a little on his own. And thats the idea behind Yiddish. It is a non-Jewish language that we took and twisted a bit in order to make it exclusive among us.

The Chasam Sofer EH 2:11 says that in ancient times Jews used to use a modified version of the non-Jewish languages for everyday (divrei chol) talk, similar to what Yiddish is.

Maharil Diskin: “For generations we are accostomed to speaking Yiddish, not Loshon HaKodesh.”

Sefer Lev HaIvri (Hagaon Rav Akiva Yosef Shlezinger) says we should not change our spoken tongue from Yiddish, and he draws parallels with our usage of Yiddish in modern times, to our usage of Aramaic in ancient times.

In the case you describe, I don’t think anyone would disagree it would have been perfectly fine to use English. Why DID he use a language he had trouble with? Just because a certain thing may be ideal doesn’t mean it is always appropriate. And I don’t see how you can blame others for his choice. Perhaps there is an element to the story you were unfamiliar with?

BTW the lawyer comparison may be a valid one. It is customary in the legal profession (normally), that the sharks, er attorneys, are only compensated by the plaintiff if they are successful. I am suggesting this may be similar to why shadchonim are customarily only compensated when successful.

The only criteria to merit joining Kollel, according to the Rambam, is being a Jew. IOW, the Rambam clearly states that every Jew is entitled to choose to join Kollel. (Obviously, it goes without saying, he must actually learn [not batul] in Kollel. But the Rambam imposes NO requirement that he be a “better learner” or whatever.)

starwolf, I saw no counterpoints to the various Chasam Sofer’s quoted, as well as the Kuzari, Maharil Diskin, Hagaon Rav Akiva Yosef Shlezinger, etc.

SJS: You missed the following I posted:

Neither is Yiddish the “language of the Jew”, any more than a black hat is the “clothing of a Jew.” But just as the purpose of the hat is “lo shinu es malbushayhen” – we want to dress differently than the seculars – the purpose of Yiddish is “lo shinu es shemom” – we want to talk differently than the seculars.

So the change between 1960 or 1970 and 2008 is not all that much. I don’t see how it would impact Reb Moshe tshuva on this issue.
