In the context of this discussion it will take us a wild tangent that is way off topic. I dont have a problem with the word per se, as much as I have a problem with its implications. Who set those expectations, based on what criteria, how legitimate are they and what happens if they are not met now, or at some time in the future. Again, it is way off topic and is best left to another thread.

Among the long list of parhas haman “jokes” that were sent around on tuesday is a line attributed to the satmar rebbe z’l. the segula of “prashas haman” only works until 9am, then you have to go to work.

“There are plenty of very nice bochurim who expect much, much less.”

My issue with this sentence is the word “expect”. What do they expect, why do they expect it and who set those expectations?

My opinion is irrelevant. According to the Levush (quoting the yerushalmi) there is a segula for one who recites it every day. I have no idea why this particular tuesday is any more significant than say any other tuesday or even august 27th. of course there is no downside in saying it. at the very least (and this is no small thing) one has the limud hatorah involved in saying the parsha. perhaps there is something extra special about this particular tuesday. I come from a long line of litvaks. We are not into segulas, we are into following the shulchan aruch and poskim (not that one who is “into segulas does not). saying parshas haman every day is brought down by the poskim. i’m not familiar with reasons for this particular day. are you?

when will consumer reports evaluate mens fedoras, so we can know once and for all, if, or how much, better a borsalino hat is then any other brand?

Whether borsalino is actually better product doesnt matter when it comes to supply and demand. The demand is for the brand, so market forces dictate they can get away with it. when you see an israeli news site do a story on the “boycott” and bachurim angrily state they must have a borsalino for “zeh keili vianveyhu” and they must charge less, borsalino realizes that they have a bunch of fools as buyers and can charge what they want. unless I’m mistaken, borsalino hat company is not owned by yidden and as a result they are not governed by the laws of onaah and instead dictate their pricing based on the laws of the marketplace. right now the laws of the marketplace say they have a bunch of foolish customers who believe their product the best out there, by far, and are willing to pay outrageous prices for them. the proof is in the pudding. despite the outrageous price, they buy it anyway (and complain while doing so). If they wouldnt buy it at that price, borsalino will either cut production to meet the newer lower demand for its hats or lower the price. till then, they are laughing at this “boycott”.

I guess if one cant say it every day as brought down by the levush in the name of the yerushalmiush, then saying it one day a year is certainly better than nothing. I have no idea what daavka this day. I try to say it every day.

the products produced in america that are made with the gelatin derived from animals, usually has a label attached to it where the rav hamachshir cites a teshuvas achiezer in support of the kosher designation. that in itself was a red flag to me, to ask my rav about it. I mean, when was the last time you saw ANY rav hamachshir affix a teshuva to a product detailing the reasons for the kashrus certificate! my rav told me that every major posek in america, litvish and chassidish held that the achiezer said something else entirely and in fact was not a basis for the kashrus of the animal derived gelatin. it is why no major hechsher in america certifies such products and the supervision comes from an individual rav.

“I personally do not eat cholov stam -“

Neither do those who rely on the psak of Rav Moshe z’l. they drink/eat what he called “chalav shel hacompanies”. He paskened that the government oversight and controls satisfied the requirement of chazal as it relates to chalav yisroel. I never asked, bu tI suspect Rav Moshe would never permit anyone to show up at a non jewish owned farm that is not under government regulation and oversight (IE, it is not a commercial establishment) and drink the milk offered by the farmer.

At any rate, as it relates to the question of lifnei iver, has anyone asked a Rav?

everyone is great at paskening shaylos. can anyone point to the siman in shulchan aruch, that says if I maintain something is forbidden, I can not help you out (such as the cases mentioned here).

To those who maintain that it IS forbidden to point someone in the direction of DD, why are you getting involved in this discussion? those who rely on the rav hamachshir will answer the question.

“And if his own posek holds cholov stam is not kosher (as various big poskim maintain), he can’t suggest, facilitate, direct or feed another Jew cholov stam (even one who holds of the very valid shitta that it is not non-kosher).”

Is this your psak or is this the psak of the shulchan aruch, or other recognized posek?

“It is highly doubtful, and certainly not a given, that DD will do much even if it were reported to them.”

You really like to make assumptions that suit your needs, dont you. Have you ever dealt with DD?

“let alone one open on Shabbos.”

Exactly what issur is involved with a non jewish store being open on shabbos? How does it affect the kashrus of the store if you rely on the Rav Hamachshir that he is doing his job properly?

“for 25 cents more it pays to go to one of the many many fine establishments under excellent strict supervision on nearly every block in brooklyn…..”

Lets finish the sentence, ….whose employees are usually non jews. So what it boils down to really is the trust you have for the Rav Hamachshir. As is true with any food you eat, look into the hechsher to see if it meets the standards you set for yourself and your family.

“so dunkin donuts franchises now tell us whats kosher.”

There is nothing wrong with them advertising they have kosher supervision. You have picked the right forum for maximum lashon hara and rechilus with your rav hamachshir bashing.

“with no full time supervision and no yehudi at all working on the premises,”

Is there a din of donuts shenisalem min ha’ayin that we are not aware of?

As for the reports of outsiders coming in and heating things in the DD microwaves, even if the food was 1000% kosher beyond any shadow of a doubt, that is a gross violation of DD policy and should be reported to DD. If they are so sure of their information they should a)report it to the Rav hamachsir and b)report it to DD.

As a general rule, you are not mistaken. Of course some “lounges” are better than others. Forget the atmosphere, the waitress who comes to serve your drink is problem number 1. The way she is typically dressed would make the average bachur blush.then there are the other patrons as you pointed out.

A smart girl (or her mother or father or whoever it is that vettes shidduch suggestions for her) should at least consider such a boy and not dismiss him out of hand.

personally, it is a valid question as it relates to “menchlechkeit” but the way the question was posed the woman was more concerned about “out of site, out of mind” and the shidduch regressing with a concern about menchlechkeit mentioned in passing. as for the shadchans response, I think she completely blew it. she basicly said be dan lekaf zechus and, give him a pass as it relates to menchlechkeit and think “absence makes the heart grow fonder” as it relates to your overall concern about the shidduch.

In all fairness to the “shvigger”, the trip to Israel was not mentioned at any time until after several dates and only then she questioned whether it was right to keep the girl in limbo while he is away. she should have asked, is it ok to go with someone else while he is away, for after all, just like she has no “claims” on someone who dated her daughter several times, he has no “rights” to this girl either. Unfortunately, she didnt ask that, instead she came across as a whiny interfering shvigger.

“and he’s going to be bar mitzvah soon”

Besides school, does this almost 13 year old hang out on nights and weekends? This is clearly, IMO, coming from the school that he is in. Perhaps speak to someone in the school. If they could care less, the kid is in the wrong school, if as you say you are powerless to change that situation, then dont get involved. Those who can change his situation obviously dont care to (and may not be careful about this either) so dont try to fight them, it will only make things worse.
