For starters, you must notify the landlord of the problem. Document this notification. Send it certified mail if necessary. If you dont notify the landlord, how do you expect him/her to take action! In NYC, call 311 who will put you in touch with the hotline where you can report all (no) heat related problems and they will also log your complaint and notify landlord. Get legal advice before doing anything else. May I suggest that if you choose to withold rent, you take the money and place it in an account that is separate from your regular account so if there is a court case and a judgment and you witheld too much, you will have easy access to the money. If you dont, you better be disciplined not to spend it.

Exactly what the OP means is very unclear. Was this person already an employee with a work schedule that was being changed to include saturdays? Was this an applicant for a job that listed saturday work as a requirement? Is this an employee who suddenly woke up one day and decided hey, I cant work saturdays any longer and used religion as the reason?

Seems to be a case that goes way beyond forcing someone to work on saturday.

If the caller is working (not sure why you have it in italics) for a telemarketing firm I still see no reason to allow them to badger you to the point where you want to wrap the phone cord around their neck, even if they are calling for tzedaka. If a sales person in a store badgered you, you would walk out, you have every right to hang up on a person who badgers you. The problem is all tzedaka calls and callers have gotten a bad rap because of a few bad apples.

If you DO feel you are being badgered, call the organization they called for and let them know.

If people bought their boys jeans they wouldn’t have to worry about holes in the knees all the time. Much more rugged.

So don’t buy it. Nothing earth shattering important in the hamodia that you won’t find anywhere else anyway.

There are typically 2 types of callers. Someone from a tzedaka calling for that tzedaka OR someone from an outside company calling “on behalf” of a specific tzedaka. I have found (I ask when they call) that those professional telemarketers who call don’t know when to stop, to the point of badgering you. It is their parnassah and they make a cut of every dollar pledged. Of course they want you to give something and sometimes won’t stop until you literally have no choice but to hang up on them. I think it is those types of calls that has gotten under peoples skin and unfortunately all “tzedaka calls” are lumped together.
