A23Participant
How old are you?
March 25, 2011 12:38 am at 12:38 am in reply to: do you eat matzah between purim and pesach? #752469A23ParticipantI try my best not to eat matzah any time that it is not Pesach. It’s especially hard in the week immediately following Pesach because of the delicious leftover shmurah, but I haven’t eaten matzah except on Pesach for about the last 5 years straight.
A23ParticipantJohn Adams
Antonin Scalia (there are a lot of other people in the law that inspire me, but most of them are Jewish, e.g., Brandeis and Posner)
Warren Buffett
A23ParticipantI definitely see this issue where frum people would rather sit next to a non-Jew on the train.
A23ParticipantI would, no real difference.
A23Participantnew2thescene, maybe this will help you understand. Imagine it’s 40 years ago and Kahane and his JDL are putting bombs in Russian offices. Then a Congressman decides that he will investigate the entire Jewish community to see what’s going on. How would you like that?
A23ParticipantPBA, do you want the name of someone I know from Harvard that doesn’t have a ‘good’ job but wants one desperately? These people exist.
A23ParticipantPBA, you are very, very, wrong about that. There are plenty of people at Harvard and the other top five schools that cannot find a $160,000/year job or a federal clerkship.
And Veltz, I’m not trying to challenge you. I just want to make sure your eyes are open to the seriousness and gravity of this decision.
March 6, 2011 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm in reply to: Know anything about getting into law school? #748297A23ParticipantVeltz, why on Earth do you think that YOU will be the one to do well in law school? You just saw that more than half of the people who graduated from Harvard Law School did not go to jobs that pay $160,000/year (yes, it’s true that some are getting clerkships, but it does not bridge the 50% gap at all). I know frum people at Harvard, Columbia, NYU, Fordham, etc. who have no job and are stuck with nothing. Nothing. Just don’t think there’s any reason that you’ll be any different.
Also, yes, we’ve all seen yeshiva guys on the firm websites, but they’re getting rarer and rarer. First, you see how few of them actually make partner? Many are relegated to the Counsel position. Second, how many associates do you see that have graduated in the last five years?
A23ParticipantTo elaborate on some of Veltz’s points.
Columbia is a tougher question, but NYU categorically does not accept BTLs. End of story.
There’s a new year of statistics, Northwestern dropped to 8th place (from 55.9% to 44.37% biglaw placement). Columbia is at 55.2%, Harvard 49.7%, NYU 43.2%, Yale 33.8%. But keep in mind that these are only people who went into biglaw directly from law school. It’s more prestigious to go to a judicial clerkship first, and that wouldn’t count.
A23ParticipantTitle of this website is The Yeshiva World News. The yeshiva world is Brooklyn. Therefore, anyone on this site must be from Brooklyn. Duh… I don’t see any breaks in my logic here.
A23ParticipantAccording to the BMI system, which is heavily disputed but the most commonly used, you are 4 pounds overweight.
A23Participanthttp://www.typingweb.com/tutor/ is very good.
A23ParticipantI’m a little surprised nobody mentioned Cantor.
March 2, 2011 1:45 am at 1:45 am in reply to: Tips for passing a Road Test in NYC other than Davening and knowing how to drive #747016A23ParticipantThe word on the street is that taking it in Staten Island is easier than at other locations.
A23Participant???
A23Participantneek, how did you know he was only obsessed with your looks?
A23ParticipantReminds me of the situation with Avraham Avinu when he was in pain after his bris.
A23ParticipantProfessional, do you have any peer-reviewed, current scientific evidence backing up your claims?
A23Participant600kb, where might I find such an item? Perhaps I need to walk into the Hatzolah garage and ask around. Interestingly, most have a Hatzolah placard (not DOT) in addition to the disabled one.
A23ParticipantCan anyone explain how it is that certain machers are able to obtain these without any actual disability? I refer to the vehicles littering Avenue J or 13th Avenue (usually with lights VAS plates affixed as well).
A23ParticipantFiOS for the win.
A23Participantmosherose, I don’t know if you’re right, but if you’re working for the government already, it’s not simply assur.
A23ParticipantIf someone does have the answers, please add on:
how many frum jews are there in the United States?
February 14, 2011 12:41 am at 12:41 am in reply to: Handed a Pen during Shiva – anyone know the story? #1006691A23ParticipantDuring maariv at a shiva home, a guy walks in during the end of Shemona Esrei. He asks someone who finished already if the chazan was the aveil. After getting a ‘yes,’ he put a pen on the table closest to the aveil and left.
600kb and gefen, there were no markings on the pen.
February 14, 2011 12:35 am at 12:35 am in reply to: What's the deal with dating with diabetes. #1088263A23ParticipantType II- definitely no problem as long as they are managing it.
Type I- is a bit more serious, but I think if it’s being dealt with properly it should be fine. (However, I wonder now whether it affects childbearing.)
A23ParticipantBottom line is, they won’t do it without the limo. It’s not that much more expensive to do a limo than to do a large van with driver (maybe $75 more). Over the course of the night, they can collect almost $1k, sometimes more, so for the organization, it’s definitely worth it.
A23ParticipantAKA47, that is a common urban myth in the goyishe velt.
February 4, 2011 3:58 pm at 3:58 pm in reply to: How can we encourage more people to become active Shadchanim? #736747A23ParticipantAZ, I’m a little confused about how this program works. How much are they paying and at what point?
A23ParticipantThe Clinic is probably ranked among the top medical facilities in the world.
A23ParticipantYes, after parking a girl did wait for me to come around and open the car door. Very weird.
A23ParticipantThank you shlishi.
A23ParticipantJewish source, I believe all of the phone companies can block texts from specific numbers if you ask them to.
A23ParticipantIf you’re referring to the one held by Agudath Israel, that is some time in summer of 2012.
A23ParticipantI’m a little confused. You want the Egyptian government to fall?
You know that the current gov is considered left-wing by Islamic standards and the Muslim Brotherhood will likely take over, right?
January 30, 2011 4:36 am at 4:36 am in reply to: Would you say no to a guy/girl after a first date for looks alone? #733319A23ParticipantI agree with Mosh3. In fact, it would be a total waste to dafka wait until two dates to say no if it’s all based on looks anyway.
A23ParticipantI just have to say it’s funny that so many people mentioned the possibility of male-female touching before the episode aired. In my years of watching the show, I don’t think I ever saw two people touching…until tonight.
This was a major kiddush Hashem. Mrs. N is a true role model for the Klal.
A23ParticipantYes, this ski-lift story was the subject of a lawsuit called Friedman v. State of New York in 1967.
A23Participant2 is so much worse. 1 is no big deal.
A23ParticipantDunno, I can’t agree with you more.
iyhby, when Salem, Oregon has over a million Jews living there, then that can be ‘in-town.’
A23ParticipantAre you asking Jewish halacha or American law?
I don’t think parents have any rights to a child halachically besides the ability to sell them as a slave.
A23ParticipantChayav,
Yochie can also be a nickname for Yocheved.
A23ParticipantIt’s possible that this roller has brought the iron in your blood closer to the surface of your skin and thus causes that taste.
You know that smell coins have? The smell is really only emanating from your fingers. If you picked up the coins with a glove, there would be no smell.
A23ParticipantAs someone who is 6’4″, if the girl is taller than me, kol hakavod.
January 16, 2011 3:09 am at 3:09 am in reply to: Know anything about getting into law school? #748249A23ParticipantI agree with RSRH. While there are some frum people who do exceptionally well in law school, from my own experience, I know that a lot of frum people (maybe even most) do worse than the average law student.
yitayningwut, I can’t emphasize this enough: you should really think about whether this is something you really need to do in life. Financially, it is not a great move.
January 14, 2011 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm in reply to: Know anything about getting into law school? #748243A23ParticipantIt’s very unfortunate that you have to rely on only a BTL in getting into a school. If you had a degree from Touro, YU, Brooklyn, or Queens, Columbia would be a sure thing and you’d likely be in at Harvard.
However, assuming that you want to stay in New York and the best school that you will get into is Fordham (I know Columbia is reluctant to accept BTLs and NYU does not accept them), you should think twice before enrolling. While it is true that you will likely get a very generous scholarship, it is very improbable that you will get a typical ‘biglaw’ job that pays the standard $160,000/year salary for first-year associates. From what I have heard from friends at Fordham, less than 10% of frum people have gotten that type of job this year. There is no reason to think that you will be the one that beats the odds.
If you are fine with working for a firm that pays $50-80k or a governmental agency paying $40-60k, then law school is a fine choice, but DO NOT go in expecting to earn the big bucks.
A23ParticipantLittle Mosque on the Prairie is probably the only show I would let my children watch. It’s very interesting and tznius to boot.
A23ParticipantPBA, there is no death tax in 2011 either. An estate tax, perhaps…
A23ParticipantI think the ages of the girl and, especially, your children are very relevant to the question.
January 9, 2011 1:25 am at 1:25 am in reply to: Councilman Greenfield; Can We End Alternate Side Parking Permanently? #725846A23ParticipantSome parts of Flatbush don’t have alternate-side. It has its advantages and disadvantages. Some people keep their cars parked for weeks at a time.
