VIDEO: NYPD Aviation Unit Rescues Father & Son In Boating Accident

A father and son on a fishing trip were fished out of danger when they became stranded in Raritan Bay today and had to be rescued by the NYPD Aviation Unit.

Timothy Shanahan Sr., 65, and his son, Timothy Jr., 22, were aboard their 26-foot leisure boat, “Out and About,” when heavy winds and rough currents stranded the vessel at around 1:30 p.m. on a rock jetty about 300 yards off the shore of Old Bridge, N.J., police said.

The NYPD was called to lend a hand and dispatched a helicopter packed with four aviation officers and two members of the scuba unit.

Using the chopper’s hoist, scuba divers Brian Singer and Francis Vitale were lowered to help the stranded men, who hail from Manalapan, NJ.

The elder Shanahan, who has had 10 heart attacks and four strokes in the past, was placed in a rescue basket and raised up to the chopper and into the waiting hands of Police Officers Matthew O’Donohoe and Gowdat Nagi.

  1. Don’t get it; Old Bridge is at least a couple of miles inland. Perhaps the township extends farther east, or northeast, if it refers to Raritan Bay.
