Ever wondered how NYC gets rid of those huge mountains of snow? The following video taken for FlatbushScoop.com will show you exactly how that’s done.
The NYC Sanitation Department brings truckloads of snow to a specific area, and placed into 20 foot mountains.
The mountains of snow are then lifted with bulldozers and dropped into gigantic snow melters.
The melter filters the snow through a screen and the water is funneled into a sewer in the street.
Visit FlatbushScoop.com to view photos, and a video taken at Bay Parkway & McDonald Avenue.

Why don’t they just dump it into the sea?
link doesnt work- site is down
Given that most of New York City (except for the Bronx) is on islands, why not dump into the ocean (remember the East River and Hudson River are really arms of the ocean – we only call them rivers). Don’t worry, it won’t cause an ecological problem. Spending money on fancy equipment and skilled crews to operate them??????????????
Well, another reason why New York is the laughing stock of the country.
1 & 3. You have to think this through. The truck would have to drive to the ocean. Drop its load and then drive back to pick up more snow. You wouldn’t accomplish anything especially with the trucks getting stuck in traffic. they need to get things done quickly.
Believe it or not, they can’t simply dump it into the rivers or ocean. The City needs special permission from the state because the snow is “contaminated” with salt and sand.
