Brooklyn — Councilman David Greenfield hit a home run with his first annual Greenfield Classic, a softball game that saw Shomrim Boro Park Division take on the 66th Precinct at Gravesend Park last Wednesday, August 18th.
Throughout the seven hard-fought innings, Shomrim Boro Park and the 66th Precinct played their hearts out for a crowd of cheering spectators. The game got off to a quick start with the 66th Precinct snatching an early lead, which they held until the third inning when Shomrim Boro Park swept in to tie the game at five. The game came down to the wire with the 66th Precinct inching out a twelve to seven victory.
“It was a thrilling game from start to finish,” said a jubilant Councilman Greenfield. “While the 66th Precinct won the game, everyone wins because the relationship between the NYPD, Shomrim, and the community is stronger than ever.”
Councilman Greenfield continued, “Despite a bit of rain, the community came out in full force and you could really feel the festive spirit in the air. The game was a rousing success and I’m already looking forward to next summer’s rematch.”
The free event drew over 400 people, including community leaders like Councilman David Greenfield, Assemblyman Peter Abbate, who represents the southeast section of Boro Park, Brooklyn Chief Joseph Fox, the 66th Precinct’s Commanding Officer Deputy Inspector John Sprague and the Executive Officer Captain Anthony Carter, and Shomrim Boro Park Coordinators Yanky Daskal, Simcha Bernath, Mottie Katz, Abe Katzow, Sam Follman and Shaya Lichtenstein.
The ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by Yehudah Leib Blonder, a student at Torah Vodaas, Councilman Greenfield’s alma-mater. The Greenfield Softball Classic was sponsored by Pomegranate, Misaskim, Luzee’s Catering, Candy Land of 16th Avenue and Klein’s Ice Cream. Thanks to their support, hundreds of people enjoyed refreshments including fresh popcorn, cotton candy, ices and a variety of drinks.
