VIDEOS & PHOTOS: Thousands Gather At Kever Shmuel HaNavi on his Yartzheit; Police Can’t Control Massive Crowds – Turn Thousands Away

Thousands gathered at the kever of Shmuel HaNavi in Yerushalayim to daven on his yartzheit. Following shkia, the Hagon Rav Menashe Klein Shlita, The Ungvar Rav ignited the bonfire outside of the tzyion, as he does every year. Simcha was in the air by the outlying areas surrounding the kever as music blasted, people danced, and a appetizing display of fruit and baked goods were made available for people to make brachos on.

Though many gathered at the kever on Tuesday night, most of the people who visit the kever will be coming Wednesday evening, as the yartzheits of Shmuel HaNavi and Chana are back to back. While the crowd control and co-ordination between security agencies during the day are down to a “T”, the crowds by the kever were out of control as the limited security personnel had to contend with throngs of people in a futile attempt to keep the kever from overcrowding. The presence of medics, who come in large numbers during the day, was sorely missed as the crowds began to be overwhelming.

Yechiel Spira filed the following report:

Many Mispallalim Were Blocked from Kever Shmuel HaNavi
Police checkpoints set up around the area prevented many from making their way to Kever Shmuel HaNavi on Tuesday night, 28 Iyar, the yahrzeit. A decision reached by the Holy Sites Authority seems to have caused the difficulties, prohibiting vehicles from traveling on the Ramot Road in the area of the kever.

A police checkpoint was established at Givat Ze’ev Junction, and motorists were informed they are not permitted to turn to the road leading to the kever, compelled to leave their vehicles behind and make their way on foot.

While thousands did make their way, many were unable to make it through one of three checkpoints, some giving up and turning around while others parked and walked long distances to make their way. Officials predict that by Wednesday night, 60,000 mispallalim will have visited the kever during the Yahrzeit.

  1. Thank HaShem for the police, if it weren’t for them, people would have killed each other by behaving like behemot, it was crazy inside people pushing and shoving without any regard to who might get hurt, unfortunately the air of kedusha of this day get lost because of some unruly bachurim.

  2. i agree. the behavior shown here was a chilul hashem in my opinion. seriously, the yeshivas need to allow sports activities in yeshiva to make the people in the video into mentchen.
