This minhag is a old minhag practice in many Yiddisher groups, the minhag is to throw fruits, the reason is a medrish which write that when haman harosho told achasvaroish to kill the jewd,he said there is a nation that does funny things…. and one if then is they throw fruits….. and so from here is this minhag
