WATCH: Vehicle Illegally Passes School Bus In Boro Park And Strikes Child – Miraculously In Stable Condition

Watch this clip and hopefully this will show everyone the importance of stopping for school busses while the red lights are flashing. This incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at 21st Avenue and 57th Street. Miraculously, the the child struck escaped with only non life-threatening injuries.

  1. As much as passing a school bus is the worst thing. This video actually shows how the car driver is not responsible. The bus driver is at fault. Watch closely, the bus TURNS OFF his lights for a few seconds, then the driver moves forward. Then the bus driver seeing the kids turns them back on. In the meantime, the driver stared driving already. He probably couldn’t even see the lights.

  2. THE BUS DRIVER IS AT FAULT 100% HERE!!!! WATCH THE VIDEO CAREFULLY.
The BUS driver failed to realize that a child needed to cross the street and turned off his flashing lights. Very obviously upon instinct the car driver (WHO CAME TO A COMPLETE AND LEGAL STOP WHEN THE BUS HAD ITS FLASHING LIGHTS ON) started to slowly accelerate. At the same time the bus driver realized his mistake and quickly turned his lights back on. Also, if you watch closely, the child walked into the fender of the car and was knocked back, the car DID NOT STRIKE THE CHILD.
Additionally, pedestrians are supposed to look both ways BEFORE crossing. (EVEN IF THERE IS A BUS HELPING YOU CROSS)

    THE HEADLINE IS COMPLETELY MISLEADING!!!

  3. I hope that the driver of the car or their lawyer gets to see the video. The car did stop for the flashing lights. What happened was that the bus driver turned off the flashing lights for a moment which is when the driver started. The driver then flipped the lights back on.

Could be the driver of the car should have been more careful, but it’s not totally their fault.

  4. I’m not sure that what he did was wrong. Please look over video again and you will see at 0.22 the driver switches off the red lights on the bus and the car starts moving, then the bus driver turns the lights on again and has already released the boy from the bus without waiting for the cars to stop.
The bus driver is at fault and not the driver of the car.

  5. Lets be fair, The Bus driver shut off his lights and then he put them back on. The driver in the car/van only started to go after he closed the red blinkers the first time, Yes he should have been more careful , The bus driver is the one that should get the blame because he was asleep at the wheel.;

  6. Look good you will see the driver closed the flashing lights for a second then the vehicle started to go and then puts it on again. Look good slowly

  7. While this is a very sad story, I dont think the headline is correct. The car stopped and waited. It seems to be that once the car saw that the bus had unloaded its passengers it started to move never presuming that some of them may cross in front the bus. Usually a bus that drops off students that must cross in front of the bus, will angle the bus so that the street is partially blocked. Not condoning the violation of the Law but nothing is at is seems.

  8. Since everyone is being makpid on the letter of the law, the law in NYC as spelled out in the code and found online at http://dmv.ny.gov/about-dmv/chapter-6-passing
might not support the driver. I know I cant tell from the video how many feet from the bus the driver stopped, but from the video it does not look like it is “at least 20 feet”. NYC law says:
    ——————–

    School Buses

When a stopped school bus flashes its red light(s), traffic that approaches from either direction, even in front of the school and in school parking lots, must stop before it reachs the bus. You should stop at least 20 feet (6 m) away from the bus. You can identify this bus by a “SCHOOL BUS” sign, the red lights on the top, and its unique yellow orange color.

From watching the video it seems to me that the driver had plenty of time to stop further away from the bus but chose not to. Given that this driver has lighting quick reaction times, as evidenced by starting to drive in the split second the lights were off, he/she could have put those lightning quick reflexes to work stopping further away from the bus.

  9. Any particular reason you wait an hour to post everyone’s comments together ? It looks like everyone is just repeating each other.

  10. I know people wrote that the lights were turned off for a second. But I don’t think the stop sign was . If the stop sign was out, then the driver of the car should not have gone.

  11. Everybody is forgetting! Look carefully, the kid struck the car and not the car struck the kid.
Also, when you ZOOM IN a camera, let say 4x, then 20 feet look like 5 feet.

  12. Thanks to all of the attorneys that have come to the car drivers defense. Perhaps one of you fine lawyers could also add a Boruch Hashem and a refuah shlaymah to the child.

  13. What’s everybody getting all worked up about? Deputy Mayor DeBlasio has his “vision zero” going into affect next week. Once everybody is driving 25 miles an hour, all accidents will end. Amazing. What a hip & cool guy.

  14. While the bus did turn the lights off for a few seconds, the car should have been more cautious. Children do impulsive and often dangerous things. B”H the child is ok.
