LIVE VIDEO: NYC Bids Final Farewell To Former Mayor Koch

Friends, family and a political who’s who have gathered on the Upper East Side today to pay tribute to former Mayor Ed Koch at his funeral.

The service is being held at Temple Emanu-el.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg will deliver the eulogy.

During his weekly radio address yesterday, Bloomberg said Koch will always be remembered as a true New Yorker.
“His good works and his wit and wisdom will forever be a part of New York. His spirit will live on – not only at City Hall and not only on the bridge that bears his name – but all across the five boroughs,” Bloomberg said.

Former President Bill Clinton is also expected to speak, along with some of Koch’s relatives, his close friend Diane Coffey, and the Israeli consul general in New York.

Koch will be laid to rest at Trinity Cemetery in Washington Heights.

He will also be honored this afternoon with a flyover by New York City Police Department helicopters.

Koch died Friday morning of congestive heart failure at the age of 88.

  1. Without getting into the debate about his yiddeshkeit and criticisim of the shul where they held the levayah and where he will be buried, its still worth acknowledging that was a great mayor for New York at a time when the city was in really desparate shape. Not someone you would invoke to be a maylitz yosher for the tzibur but certainly warrants respect for his secular acomplishments.
