Fire tore through the Grandview Palace condominiums on Route 52 in Loch Sheldrake Saturday evening.
The blaze in the former Brown’s Hotel burned through the roof of the 396 unit housing complex as firefighters from a number of area departments poured water on the flames. They were still on the scene Sunday morning fighting the fire. New fire departments were called in to relieve others that were on the scene all night long.
Displaced residents were taken to nearby Sullivan County Community College where officials opened the fieldhouse for shelter.
Grandview Palace had been inspected not long ago for fire code violations.
Back in July 2006, a condominium unit caught fire sending four police officers to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
In its heyday, the Brown’s Hotel was one of the signature hotels of the Catskills’ Borscht Belt era.
This is the second major fire at a former resort in week. Last Saturday, April 7, a major fire destroyed the old Tamarack Lodge in Greenfield Park, burning over 30 buildings and acres of brush.
