VIDEO: What Rick Santorum Thinks About The West Bank

GOP Presidential hopeful Rick Santorum was captured on video recently answering a question to a young man, regarding his positions on the West Bank.

In the conversation Santorum compares Texas to the West Bank, and says the just like Texas was captured in a war, so was the West Bank, and just like Texas is part of the United States, the West Bank is part of Israel.

Santorum also said the following:

“All the people that live in the West Bank are Israelis. They are not Palestinians. There is no Palestinian. This is Israeli land.”

  1. I wonder how much this video cost A.I.P.A.C.?

This guy is a politician and will change his tune the second he is met with the slightest opposition.

  2. To #1. There comes a point where you need to draw the line between dismissing someone’s opinions because they are a politician or because they passionately hold of them and believe in them.

Rick Santorum passionately believes in what he says. It takes a smart person to see beyond his words what’s driving what he says. You were just so antsy to make a comment on the article that you ended up making yourself look like a fool.

  3. First, the disclaimer: I have not played the video.

I have read the article, and the statement about Texas is just plain wrong. Texas was not “captured in a war.” Texans rebelled against the rule of Mexicans, fought a war against Mexico, won the war, and thereby became an independent, sovereign nation (in 1835, I believe). After a short period of independence from Mexico, Texas asked to join the United States, and thus became part of the United States. Perhaps this article misquotes or misinterprets Mr. Santorum’s actual words, but as reported above, his words are just plain wrong.

For even wronger information about how Texas became a part of the United States, see the comments of Texas Governor Rick Perry, another of the 7 dwarfs seeking the Republican nomination for president. He thinks that when Texas joined the Union, it reserved or otherwise retained a right to secede if Texas becomes unhappy with the US. That’s just nuts. And if I am not mistaken, Texas (along with 10 other states) actually did attempt to secede from the US in 1861, fought a war, lost a war, and affirmatively agreed not to secede from the United States when it was allowed to disavow its secession and participate in Congress following the military defeat of the confederacy.

  4. #3 I’m sure you believe that he believes it. However the neocon front runers have all been trying to out do eachother with this fake pro Israel rhetoric.

This is just Santorum uping the stakes.

Once he got the nomination you would see him back down from this position. Especially since it would be bad for his image if he were a bigger “zionist” then the PM of Israel.

Remember, even our good friend George W. Bush left our side at certain points…this guy is no different.

  5. I happan to agree with you both. However because Rick Santorum is new we have to be careful becasue we dont know him from Adam. With that said anyone running on the republican platform trying to get the majority will side with Israel just for the sake of politics. When he actually gets on the same stage as Obama head to head lets see what happens. Also lets see what happens when a Muslim throws a milion dollas towards his campaign.

  6. Just to comment on narishkeit by some writers above: Whether or not Texas and the West Bank situation are comparable, completely misses the point. The point Santorum is making is that the West Bank belongs to Israel.

To the cynics who dismiss his statements as just politics, note that Israel had more real support from Republicans like George W. Bush, and even Nixon, that any Democratic president. Remember all the pressure Bill Clinton put on Israel to surrender land? And Carter set new lows for a Democrat. Those candidates who are friends of Israel because of their religious beliefs, would be the last ones to turn on her.

You are correct, but Santorum is as well. The American settlers of Texas did indeed revolt against Mexico and declare itself the Republic of Texas. And yes, it was annexed by the U.S. in 1845. But the part you are leaving out is that Mexico did not recognize sovereignty by the United States of the territory in Texas between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande. Pres. Polk thought otherwise, and that spurred the Mexican-American War. As well, until 1848 Texas was part of the U.S., in Mexico’s eyes, only de facto. After that, with the purchase of the Western U.S., it became de jure.

Also lets see what happens when a Muslim throws a milion dollas towards his campaign.

I highly doubt that will happen, considering that Rick has said he’d profile Muslims.

  8. NFGO #3
I lose respect for people who insult gratuitously.
Calling the gop contenders the 7 dwarfs sounds like you’re trying to buttress your arguments with sensationalism.
BTW Texas, also know as the lone republic DOES have the technical right to sucede, the only state.
    Next time check your facts.
ALSO I wonder why people cant just say,
THat is nice, i look forward to having you maintain thatt position in face of objections.

  9. Nfgo3, Texas was captured in Mexican-American war. Without the intervention of the US, the Mexicans would have cut all the Texan rebels to pieces.

  10. Now that there is some serious question about how the votes were counted in Iowa, and that Rick Santorum may have possibly won Iowa, by virtue of Romney having been overcounted by 20, it throws the accuracy & perception of Iowa’s caucaus into limbo.
