VIDEO: Early Morning Kaparos In Modi’in Illit

It’s 2 AM – do you know where your chickens are? If you live in Modi’in Illit, they are huddled up in a wooden pen in the center of town waiting to be selected for shchita (ritual slaughter) by people preforming the kaparos ritual ahead of Yom Kippur, which falls out this year in Friday night. “We will be going on here until 5 to 6 AM” said one of the organizers, who then donate the slaughtered chickens to needy families to eat at their meals preceding the fast day.
