Year after year, people have died on Route 17B. Now NY state plans to fix a short, but dangerous stretch of it. This summer, the DOT will widen a half-mile section from Kaufman Road to Hamilton Road, at a cost of $1.9 million. They will add a 12-foot lane and build two large culverts by this fall. The stretch runs in Monticello, just west of the Monticello Raceway.

I’ve driven 17B many times. Never found it especially dangerous.
I have personally witnessed an accident on the 17B, and heard of many others. I am happy to hear they are doing something about it.
