Rockland: Private matzah bakery sets home on fire

A matzo-baking operation ignited a fire in a home late yesterday when heat from a fireplace sent flames to the upper floor and attic. Three fire departments – Monsey, Tallman and South Spring Valley – responded to 5 Deborah Road after a 911 call reporting that the house was on fire.

When firefighters arrived soon after the 4:32 p.m. call for help, they were able to contain the fire to one section of the brick Colonial at the end of the cul-de-sac.

Chris Van Schaick, the Chestnut Ridge fire safety inspector, said a dangerous baking procedure had led to the fire.

People had been baking matzos on slabs of stone resting on beds of charcoal inside a pair of propane-fueled barbecue grills on an outdoor patio.

Another bed of hot charcoal had been laid inside a gas-fired fireplace, where the people were carrying them for a final charring.

There were no injuries, Perry said, and the family had evacuated by the time the firefighters arrived.

  1. this should be a lesson for all others vinishmartem meod lenafshosachem comes before baking your own matzos in your basement or schoolbus

  2. Yes B”H no one was injured in this incident or the school bus bakery…We as Jews if care so much about our mitzvahs and want to bake their own Matzahs. The issue is Saftey and common sense first should always be the issue. If we can even be Mechal Shabbos to save a life don’t you think we should be Machmir on protecting that life before it gets injured.
Saftey should be the first consideration before building your own bakery or even building a fire to burn Chometz and yes children were seriously injured this year in chometz burning fires. Protect Jewish live first and foremost and if you can’t bake safely go to a local matzoh factory that is already established or you can always buy Matzah at the store, now that a unique concept.

  3. Stupidity at its finest.
Why are they baking matzohs in their basements, reserve a time at a matzoh factory built with safety codes and bake your matzohs there. It always looks as if us Torah Jews ignore the safety codes and regulations, and it end up being a chilul hashem.
