Edmonton: Number of hate crimes take a dip

Alberta bucked a trend last year that saw anti-Semitic incidents rise across Canada. But while reported hate crimes against the Jewish community in Edmonton and Calgary dipped slightly from 2005 to 2006, intolerance remains alive and well in the province.

There were 22 anti-Semitic incidents in Edmonton and 23 in Calgary during 2006.

Slightly more than half of the province’s recorded incidents were classified as anti-Semitic harassment. The other half was vandalism. That included vandalism at a west-end school last June 23.

Vandals defaced the Talmud Torah School, at 6320 172 St., with spray-painted swastikas and other graffiti.

About a week later, vandals struck at the Edmonton Jewish Community Centre, 7200 156 St., breaking windows, slashing a tire on a centre vehicle and lighting a small fire on the grounds, Szlachter said, adding only about 10% of all incidents get reported.

Alberta recorded no reports of anti-Semitic violence. Edmonton police investigated five reports of anti-Semitism last year, Szlachter said.

  1. It may have dipped slightly, due to the increase of Muslim problems and terrorists found within the Canadian frontier. The Canadians while focusing on the Muslim problem, has been ignoring the Jewish presence, but this will not last!!
