Israel: Name needed for 2nd Lebanon War

idf soldiers.jpgThe government declared on Monday that last summer’s fighting in Lebanon is now officially a “war,” Ynetnews and The Jerusalem Post reported. The Ministerial Committee for Symbols and Ceremonies made the decision over six months after the end of a war that left 160 Israelis dead.

The committee will now focus on finding a suitable name for the war which, after receiving government approval, will be announced on Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day).

Many names have been suggested to the committee, including: War of the North, Shield of the North War, The Second Lebanon War, Peace for the North War, War of the Captives, Operation Homeland Defense, and The War to Return the Captives.

The IDF called the war “Operation Change of Direction.”

Minister Jacob Edery, the head of the Ministerial Committee for Symbols and Ceremonies, explained that the decision to call the conflict a war was due, in large part, to pressure from the families who lost soldiers during the war.

The families accused the government of stalling and dishonoring the memory of their dead loved-ones by not immediately deciding on a name.
