New York: Wannabe NYC subway bomber gets 30 years

A Pakistani immigrant was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday for hatching an unsuccessful plot to blow up a busy Manhattan subway station as revenge for wartime abuses of Iraqis.

Shahawar Matin Siraj, 24, was arrested Aug. 27, 2004, on the eve of the Republican National Convention. Though there was no proof he ever obtained explosives or was linked to any terror organizations, prosecutors said his intentions were ominous: He wanted to blow up the Herald Square subway station.

He showed no reaction as the sentence was read, and faces deportation when his sentence is completed.

  1. 30 years in prison in essence means just 10 years since he is eligible for parole after serving one third of his sentence. he must be locked up in prison for life without parole.

  2. To Bugnot: We shouldn’t hang him because we wan’t him to suffer just like we wanted Saddam Hussein YM”S to suffer but he should suffer not just sit in jail and he shouldn’t be sentenced to only 30 years since it will end up being about 12 years he should be sentenced to at least 45 years which would end up being about 30 years.
