YWN Election Recap, Primary Day NYC


voten.jpgThe following are some of the important election results from “Primary day” held in NYC today.

MOYORAL ELECTION PRIMARY: The battle to be New York’s next mayor starts Wednesday, after city Comptroller William Thompson won an easy victory over his primary opponent Tuesday night – paving the way for a head-to-head challenge against Mike Bloomberg.

PUBLIC ADVOCATE: Brooklyn City Councilman Bill de Blasio and former Public Advocate Mark Green are headed for a runoff in the close Democratic race for Public Advocate.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, de Blasio had 33 percent of the vote to 31 percent for Green.

Queens City Councilman Eric Gioia came in third place with 18 percent, while lawyer Norman Siegel got 14 percent. With neither candidate likely to get 40 percent, there would be a runoff in two weeks on Sept. 29.

The Democrat who wins the primary for public advocate is favored to win the general election in November since there is no strong Republican challenger this year.

CITY COMPTROLLER: Queens City Councilman John Liu and Brooklyn City Councilman David Yassky are headed for a runoff in the Democratic primary for City Comptroller.

With 99 percent of the precincts reporting, Liu held a slim lead over Yassky. Liu received 38 percent of the vote, while Yassky got 30 percent.

Queens City Councilwoman Melinda Katz landed 20 percent, while Queens City Councilman David Weprin came in fourth with 11 percent.

With neither candidate likely to get 40 percent, there would be a runoff on Sept. 29.

The Democrat who wins the primary for comptroller is heavily favored to win the general election since there is no strong Republican challenger.

NYC COUNCIL SEATS (BORO PARK & WILLIAMSBURG): Brad lander has won the race for NYC’s 39th District (Boro Park).

Below are the numbers (Reporting 132 of 132 precincts – 100%):

Josh Skaller (Dem) 3180 25.51%
John Heyer (Dem) 2753 22.09%
Bob Zuckerman (Dem) 930 7.46%

Stephen Levin has won the race for NYC’s 33rd District (Williamsburg).

Below are the numbers (Reporting: 147 of 147 precincts – 100.00%):

MANHATTAN DISTRICT ATTORNEY: Defense lawyer and political scion Cy Vance is poised to become Manhattan’s first new district attorney in 35 years after winning Tuesday’s Democratic primary for one of the nation’s most coveted prosecutor’s jobs. The primary essentially decided the race to replace the retiring Robert Morgenthau, as there is no Republican running. Democratic contender Richard Aborn has secured the Working Families Party line on the November ballot but has said he will support the Democratic nominee.

  1. You forgot to post that Jumaane Williams Defeated the incunmbent Kendall Stewart in the 45th Council District as ther are many frum yidden in that disict also.

  2. What a shame the 2 Satmar factions couldn’t come together behind Abraham. Had they, he may have taken half of Levins 33% + the 12% that he got yielding him close to 30% while Levin would have been down to under 20%. Having another frum yid on the council would have been good not only for Williamsburg but for all Frummeh Yidden. What a shame.
