The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation today launched its expansion project. Mayor Bloomberg broke ground for an industrial building on Perry Street that’s being developed for multi-tenant occupancy.
It’s the first of seven buildings included in the three-year expansion, the largest at the Navy Yard since World War Two. The project will create 400,000 square feet of industrial capacity, focused primarily on food manufacturing and processing. Plans are currently being finalized for phase two of the expansion, which will include 1.5 million square feet of added industrial space in the yard’s eastern section.
The Navy Yard was established in 1801 and was closed by the federal government in 1966. It currently houses more than 230 private sector firms.
