  1. Would someone please explain to me what is “apple throwing” all about, and how is it Mutur to throw food.

I tell my kids, when they throw food, that it is a huge Aveirah.

Please shed some light on the subject.

  2. It was customary in Bavel to throw apples to the children from the roof of the beis medresh during shavues, both to give joy to the children, and to represent the in-gathering of exiles. This eventually became a Simches torah custom instead.

What you see in the video-clip is the rebbe and his chasidim continuing the joy of the occassion.

The talmidim lucky enough to chap an apple will probably share it at home. The rejoicing in the Torah will thus continue, and be spread further, like a mitzvah that one person tasks another with doing, so that both share the merit thereof. Kler, nu?

  3. By the way,the gemara speaks about how they used to throw nuts at a chasson and kallah….there are certain occasions which throwing food is NOT bezoyen ochlin.

  4. For interest’s sake, If I remember correctly, the Rebbe throws 26 apples corresponding to the gematria of shem hashem-yud kay vav kay.
