Prague – Terrorist plot to capture and murder Israelis

An alleged plot to take Israelis hostage in a Prague synagogue sparked what is now a two-week-old terrorism alert in the Czech Republic. Heavily armed police officers have patrolled the Jewish Quarter since the government uncovered the plot, which Minister of Interior Ivan Langer called the country’s “first concrete threat of a terrorist attack.”

The alleged attack was supposed to coincide with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year period, when many Israeli tourists visit Prague and its seven major synagogues, said the Mlada fronta Dnes newspaper.

“Arab terrorists wanted to abduct dozens of people, hold them hostage, and in the end massacre all of them,” the newspaper reported.

Government officials declined comment on the report.

The alert which began Septmber 22 led to tightened security at Prague’s airport and train stations as well as areas around the synagogues.
