Interesting sentence handed down for hate crime

A unique sentence for two Attleboro (Massachusetts) teens comes down after they plead guilty to a hate crime. Christian Dorrance and Joshua Desmarais, both 19, admitted Monday to vandalizing former teacher Naomi Cordell’s property. They painted swastikas on her car and driveway. The judge ordered the two teens visit the Rhode Island Holocaust Museum, write a letter of apology to Cordell and pay for the damages.

  1. the fact that it was called a hate crime by law enforcement when the crime was against a Jew (assuming cordell is Jewish) —————— is a chiddush!

  2. Reminds me of when two shgotzim broke into Reb Hillel David’s shul one Friday night and rolled out the sifrei torah on the floor, spray painetd swastikas and then torched the place. (15? yearg ago)

I remember walking to shul with my father Shabbos morning and on the way there seeing anohter mispalel walking away from the shul. My father joked “Reb Leib, you’re going the wrong direction”. He just shook his head and continued on. Only once we got to shul did we see what had happened. The destruction was horrific. The Police had removed all taleisim and tefilin that weren’t burned and set them on a table in front of the Shul. Davening took place in the Chaim Berlin mesivta. After davening everyone went to the shul to demonstrate their anguish. Hundreds of yidden were there.

On Sunday there was a massive levaya on Coney Island Avenue for the sifrei Torah. I was only a child but will never forget the thousands of people at that levaya.

The two shgotzim (aged 15 and 16) were sentenced to a few weekends community service, and were ordered to write an apology.
