Orthodox Jews in the eastern suburbs want traffic lights in their area reprogrammed so they do not have to press a button to activate the walk signal.
After gaining unanimous backing for the idea from Waverley Council last week the community last night won the endorsement of Woollahra Municipal Council. The councils will ask the Roads and Traffic Authority to make the change at two intersections on Old South Head Road at Bondi and Bellevue Hill.
Orthodox Jews are prohibited from using electronic means to activate the pedestrian light on the Sabbath – Friday evenings and Saturdays. Doing so would constitute “work” and break Jewish law. They are also prevented from asking others to press the buttons. The community wants an automatic walk signal during each traffic cycle.
