The New York Fire Department said there was a gas meter explosion on the 14th floor of a building located at 36 W. 47th St. near Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
Both the FDNY and Con Edison were called to the scene.
There were reports of heavy gas odors in the area, but Con Ed turned off the gas. The Fire Department declared the scene under control at about 11 a.m.
Forty people were evacuated from floors 14, 15 and 16 because of the gas odor, but no injuries were reported.
