The Central Election Committee on Monday will vote on disqualifying the Arab Balad party, barring it from running in the upcoming general election for the 18th Knesset.
Three requests have been filed with the committee, calling to oust Balad for the party’s refusal to recognize Israel as the Jewish Homeland. While the committee is made of members of the political parties, is prepared to oust Balad as a result. Balad leader Jamal Zahalka has released a statement that “democracy has given way to fascism”.
When Balad was disqualified in the 2003 race, it turned to the High Court of Justice, which reversed the decision. While Kadima representatives on the committee appear willing to join their right-wing counterparts to oust the Arab party, the radical left-wing Meretz Party opposes the move, and the opposition is supported by representatives of the Labor Party as well. So their votes will go to other Arab parties, some of which might otherwise fail to cross the threshold, especially if there is a high turnout among Jews (including all non-Arabs) and a low turnout among Arabs.
The effectivenss of banning a party is clear. R. Kahane’s party was banned, and as a result one notes that all Israelis today are good little liberals who favor appeasement and surrender. 🙂
I’m afraid, at this time Hight Court of Israel or someone else again will fail the efforts to stop those terrorists from running in the elections. It’s only Kahane party was quickly dissmised and declared illegal, because it’s seems it’s a democracy when you speak against Jews, but you can not speak against Arabs.
