China lodged an angry complaint with Jerusalem this week after it learned that five Israeli lawmakers were meeting with officials in Taiwan. Chinese Ambassador to Israel Chen Yonglong called for an urgent meeting with the head of the union for Sino-Israel relations, during which he expressed his government’s fury over the incident.
Ynet reported on Wednesday, that while in Taiwan, Knesset members from the Shas, National Union and Kadima parties met with Taiwanese officials, Israel’s envoy to the island nation, and a local rabbi.
Ynet quoted Yonglong as saying that if such an incident “happens again, that matter will be viewed as critical.”
MK David Tal, who was one of the five to visit Taiwan, responded by saying China “should not worry about a few people from Shas. We kept a low profile.”
He added that Israel stands ready to “to hold a reconciliation meeting and even act as mediators” between China and Taiwan.
