TJN: A 4-year-old girl was listed in critical condition last night after she was hit by a delivery van outside her Bush Lane home. Freida Langsam was taken by Chevra Hatzolah Ambulance Corps to Nyack Hospital after the 2:41 p.m. accident and later flown to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, Ramapo police said.Sgt. Vincent Eichner said police were still conducting a preliminary investigation and no charges had been filed against the driver of the van, Yakov Dancziger.Police had taped off a section of Bush Lane and took photographs of the front left bumper of the gray 1998 Ford van, which had New York license plates.
Eichner said the van was traveling north on Bush Lane when it struck the girl, who was accompanied by her mother.
The girl suffered injuries to her chest, head and upper torso, Eichner said.
“I would assume her injuries to be serious,” he said at the crash scene.
A crowd of mostly young children gathered around the accident scene. Students being dropped off by a school bus on Washington Avenue ran to the scene, where police cars blocked off the road.
Etta Ostreicher, who lives across the street, said the girl was running across the street to her mother when she was struck by the van.
Ostreicher said the girl was the youngest of three daughters.
“The mother is always watching the kids,” Ostreicher said. “The kids are never alone outside. She’s a very responsible woman.”
Ramapo Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence said he would work to cut down on similar accidents.
“This is terrible,” he said. “We had a girl who was killed last month and now this.”
On June 29 an 11-year-old girl died after she was hit by a van while crossing Saddle River Road in Monsey. Leah Ausband, a Bronx resident visiting family in Monsey, apparently walked in front of a white van driven by Alexander Alexeev of Spring Valley. The van knocked her to the ground and ran over her.
St. Lawrence said he would visit public and private schools and meet with parents, teachers and community leaders to stress safety when it comes to children and cars.
