UCSJ: At a Tuesday press conference, the head of the Saratov regional FSB, Valery Beklenishchev, announced that his agency had prevented a planned bomb attack against a local synagogue, according to a July 18, 2006 report by the Volga regional section of the RIA Novosti news agency. During operational activities, Chekists [FSB officials] found out that a 22 year old leader of a local underground pro-fascist organization intended to cause an explosion in a synagogue, Mr. Beklenishchev said. The suspect was allegedly preparing to put together an explosive device and was looking for people to help him carry out the attack. FSB officials then approached him and warned him about the consequences of his planned action, successfully persuading him not to commit the attack. The suspect then confessed to the plot and to holding extremist beliefs, upon which he was released without being charged. In accordance with the law, criminal charges were not filed in connection with his confession, and the young man avoided his first criminal conviction, the FSB head concluded. Whether or not it would have been appropriate for the FSB or regional prosecutors to charge the suspect with membership in an extremist organization was not discussed in the report. Russian Jewish web sites have so far carried no announcements regarding todays announcement or the authorities decision not to prosecute the suspect.
