Basic Molasses Crinkles

It’s nice to have a go-to standby that just always works and always tastes good.

1 cup brown sugar

¾ cup shortening

¼ cup molasses

1 egg

2-1/4 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon ginger

½ teaspoon cloves

Sugar for rolling

Beat together brown sugar, shortening, molasses and egg.  Add remaining ingredients (except sugar for rolling) and mix well.  Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.  Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Shape dough into balls and roll in sugar. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet.  Bake for 10 to 12 minutes.  Let sit 1 to 2 minutes; then remove to wire rack to finish cooling.
