This can be made the really easy way with Hunt’s Sloppy Joe sauce from a can (nothing to be ashamed of; I’ve used it many a time!) or, with a little extra effort, with this from-scratch recipe.
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, diced
1 green pepper, diced
1 red pepper, diced
2 teaspoons minced garlic
3 pounds lean ground beef or 1-1/2 pounds ground beef and 1-1/2 pounds ground turkey (don’t use all ground turkey; it will be too dry)
¼ cup brown sugar
¼ cup (no fish) Worcestershire sauce
1 quart (4 cups) tomato sauce
2 cups beef stock (homemade or the new Manischewitz in a box)
1 tablespoon hot-pepper sauce (optional)
8 kaiser rolls, cut in half (I like these better than hamburger buns but you can substitute hamburger buns in a pinch)
In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and peppers and cook until softened. Add garlic and meat and cook until browned. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes. Spoon over bun bottoms, top and serve.
