Caramel Apple Crisp

This dessert is always a hit.  If you make it for a dairy meal, serve it with real vanilla ice cream.  But if not, the pareve will do especially if the crisp is warm.  It’s so good; I’m getting a craving as I write.

Topping:

1-1/4 cups flour

1-1/4 cups sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

¾ cup (1-1/2 sticks) margarine, cut into small pieces

Filling:

½ cup sugar

¼ cup (1/2 stick) margarine

6 apples (I always prefer Granny Smith), sliced

Mix together all topping ingredients with your fingers or a fork or a pastry blender until you have coarse crumbs. Set aside.  Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  In a large skillet, heat margarine and sugar over medium heat.  Stir until sauce is smooth and a deep brown color.  Toss in apples and coat.  Pour into 9 x 3-inch pan and spread across the bottom.  Sprinkle topping evenly across the top.  Bake for about 50 minutes. Best served warm with either whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
