How Dress Shirt Brand Atica Cracked the Luxury-for-Less Code

Menswear brand Atica is disrupting the marketplace with high-quality shirts for unbeatable prices. Manufactured alongside exclusive, luxury brands, Atica’s shirts offer customers a luxe experience for a fraction of the cost.

Looking for a classic non-iron dress shirt? A quick google search will pull up a wide variety of mass-produced retail brands that will set you back $30-50. Want a quality brand-name shirt that will hold up to wear and tear? Be ready to put down $200.

“There has long been a binary in the dress shirt marketplace,” says Reuven Kaminetzky, founder of the Atica dress shirt brand. “You are either getting an affordable shirt that compromises on quality or a premium shirt with the price tag to match.”

Non-iron shirts have become a wardrobe favorite among menswear enthusiasts, but not all non-irons are created equal. Most non-iron treated shirts are coated in formaldehyde, a chemical that may come off in as little as twenty washes and can result in a plastic-like feel on skin. The chemical-treating process can also compromise the lifespan of a shirt, making it more susceptible to stains and fabric deterioration.

“People have just accepted that their average dress shirt that gets regular wear will last about a year,” says the Brooklyn-based Atica founder. “It doesn’t have to be that way.”

Innovative fabric processing techniques have transformed the non-iron industry, ensuring that treated fabric can now remain as soft, comfortable, and durable as untreated 100% cotton. Dress shirts made of this specialized wrinkle-resistant fabric can be washed again and again and still look like new. But the meticulous manufacturing process comes at a cost. “Customers who want to buy a shirt that is a level above mediocre, have to pay triple the cost,” says Kaminetzky.

Atica’s product development team set out to break the status quo. After identifying the elements that buyers value most in the luxury standard-bearer in the dress shirt industry, the team sought out a factory that could develop similar shirts with those features – without the designer markup. By partnering with luxury retail manufacturers, Atica was able to leverage the factories’ economies of scale to bring down the cost per shirt and pass those savings on to the customer.

“Our goal is to provide our customers with the best bang for their buck,” says Kaminetzky. “Our shirts are manufactured in the same factories as luxury brands – for a fraction of the price.”

Incorporating the latest technical innovations in fabric was only step one. Atica’s designers also focused on developing elevated shirt styles with luxe-looking details from presidential collars to French plackets to understated cuffs. The tailoring of each signature shirt was meticulously designed down to the drape and fit of each shirt, resulting in stylish, timeless, and affordable pieces — without compromising on quality.

“We are disrupting the retail marketplace and our satisfied repeat customer base speaks for itself,” says Kaminetzky. “We believe that in a world without dress codes, everyone should be able to access perfectly fitted luxury.”
