Several days ago, he received a phone call that he says he will never, ever forget.
The terror in the voice on the other line was palpable. It was Rabbi Levi Cohen* calling from Odessa, Ukraine. In harried tones, Rabbi Cohen explained that hundreds of members of the Odessa community have been unable to escape, and are still stuck in Ukraine as airstrikes threaten them. As the line started to go fuzzy, Eli could barely make out what Rabbi Cohen was saying:
“People here will starve if we don’t get help soon. Please help us quickly– We are running out of food!”
Then, the line went dead.
Due to the food shortage in Ukraine, local store owners in Odessa are charging exorbitant prices for bread and frum people are terrified how they will feed their families. On behalf of the frum Jews of Odessa, Eli has launched an emergency campaign with the ardent mission to feed these families so they can survive. As the days stretch on, Odessa can only hope that the funds will be raised in time.
