In anticipation of their upcoming accounting course, PCS spoke to Yitzy Simon, a current student.
Can you tell us about the job market.
I was looking to join a bigger firm- I’ve found that there are a lot of opportunities out there. The hard part is gaining access to those opportunities because you are up against some serious competition.
That’s where the PCS networking comes in. For people looking to join smaller firms, PCS has connections to help students get hired. In the bigger firms, PCS serves as the platform for networking to help connect students to the right people to help you get hired.
I will be graduating in August, and I already have a job in audit job with Grant Thornton, starting in October. When I met with the placement director, we mapped out my plan. As soon as I submitted my resume to Grant Thornton, PCS put me in touch with people that worked there, who were instrumental in helping me understand the dynamics of the firm, as well as the interview process. The interview preparation is very important. The fact that I was able to speak to people that went through it, was very helpful- in knowing what to say and in gaining confidence.
Please tell us about the PCS Accounting Program.
The program is very practical for guys coming straight out of yeshiva. The material is very content focused. The program is very convenient; the teachers are accommodating. Their style of teaching is very understandable; they present the material in a clear hands-on style.
In general, the teachers are in it for the students’ good- they really want us to succeed. I feel well prepared for a career in accounting.
For whom would you recommend the field of accounting?
Accounting is a good career choice for someone who appreciates detail and can keep things organized.
Really this field is for anyone that wants to understand how businesses run- for those that want to go into accounting or entrepreneurship. The jobs that the graduates of this course get span the spectrum- nursing homes, accounting, real estate and business. This course gives students a solid background in business- as well as accounting- which can be applied to many fields.
