Purim is here, and the activities of the day are underway. One of the most important mitzvos involved is that of matanos l’evyonim. Many are unsure as to whether they have given enough, or to the right place.
Kupat Ha’Ir’s massive matanos l’evyonim campaign is backed each year with stellar recommendations from the gedolim. The collected money is dispersed on the day of Purim to individuals who have been pre-screened by the organization in order to determine the extent of their need. Many of the poorest widows, orphans, and talmidei chachamim in Israel will ‘increase their joy’ on Purim upon receiving the much needed financial boost.
Each year, Rav Chaim Kanievsky is pictured donating to Kupat Ha’Ir directly after megillah reading. The Rav is quoted as saying, “It is my custom now for several years to give Matanos L’evyonim to Kupat Hair immediately after Megillah reading, and through this I have fulfilled my requirement (of Tzedaka for Purim day).”
This precise yet meaningful declaration takes much of the guesswork out of the mitzvah, enabling donors to rest assured that the mitzvah is fulfilled to the strictest extent.
