When we think Holocaust, there is endless footage in our minds depicting the horrors under Hitler. But what about those who managed to escape the Nazi occupation?
With the start of the Three Weeks, Project Witness releases a trailer today for its new documentary, “ROSJA,” the story of countless Jewish families forced out of Poland to be unwanted “guests” in Stalinist Russia.
Theirs is a story of impossible choices, unbearable suffering and incredible survival. Yet, in contrast to the records kept by the Nazis, very little is documented about their plight.
Rosja is the culmination of years of research and months of filming on sets from Pennsylvania to Siberia. A staggering mix of firsthand testimony and stunning reenactments, the documentary masterfully tells of the exile, starvation, frost and disease that defined this unique chapter of the Holocaust.
In a particularly difficult twist, survivors speak about their return to Poland after the war, unaware of what had transpired there. Some people were even mocked for trying to find surviving family. “My father went looking for his children,” relates Marlene Stevens. “He had seven sons. Thirteen grandchildren. And they were all gone. All of them.”
Rosja, the sixth full-length documentary by Project Witness, will premiere on July 11, at the Williamsburg Hotel, with an evening of inspiration and experience.
The program will include keynote speaker Mr. Malcolm Hoenlein, MC Mr. Ben Brafman and a musical a cappella tribute to be performed by Simcha Leiner.
